VIDEO: It took me a few tries to get it right, but now Milan is one of my favorite cities. Over the years I've honed this mini tour to get my dose of Italy's fashion & industrial capital - which usually happens after a long flight when getting out there is the best way to power through the jetlag and soak in the culture, vibe, and negronis - of this vibrant city.

Referred to simply as the “Jersey Shore”, the Atlantic-faring side of the Garden State spans about 140 miles of oceanfront. And cyclists get to experience all of it thanks to some amazing rides on the Jersey Shore. Here are four biking routes that are sure to leave your heart, as they say here, “down the shore.”

One of the best reasons for choosing a good bike hotel is their skill to show me the best their region has to offer - like routes, rides, food & drink that I simply could not find on my own. This ride (and subsequent wine tasting) never would have have happened without my guide from Garda Bike Hotel leading me on a relaxed ride through the hills of valpolicella and an even more relaxed stop at the Santa Maria Valverde winery.

Travel: Stage 18 of the 2019 Tour de France will climb the mighty Col du Galibier at 2645 meters altitude. I "rode" it back in 2017 - maybe better to say I hauled my carcass up it. Here's a glimpse of the climb as I get inside 3km to the summit. It really is epic and awe inspiring - a must do.

Lombardia Ride: Sometimes you gotta point the car at the cliff and give ‘er some stick. Okay, maybe heading out for an awesome solo ride may not be quite the same... but sometimes heading into the unknown is best approached with a ‘give ‘er’ attitude, and as I once again learned on this awesome ride around Lago di Como, the rewards can be worthy of a lifetime.

One sign of a great bike hotel is which pro teams also stay there for training camps. Nicola & Alberto, who run the Garda Bike Hotel on Lake Garda in Italy, host Peter Sagan and the Bora-Hansgrohe team regularly. I've stayed here too and can tell you it's an excellent choice for a cycling holiday. Here's a cool look at a recent ride with Peter Sagan and his team mates.

The Carpegna climb is best known as Marco Pantani's favorite training ground - and at 11%+ grades for 7km - it was a perfect place for the late climbing sensation to hone his legendary skills. I'd long wanted to ride it for myself, and got the chance this year while visiting the bike Hotel Lungomare in Cesenatico.

France From Inside Tours offers some of the best cycling trips in the Pyrenees in southern France, and one of their best is the epic Conquer the Pyrenees: 12 days riding 1000 miles from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean and back, climbing over 100,000 feet. The company owner and lead guide, Allan Reeves, explains why this trip is so popular, it's back for the 13th year.

Cycle a Mediterranean island, watch the TDF in the French Alps, or let a famous chef prepare your meals in Tuscany—Grand Tours and cycling vacations are as abundant as cols in Europe, and the options for this year’s big biking trip can be overwhelming.

Great scenery, a spectacular climb and a twice as long descent, the Col de la Madone climb along France’s cote d’Azur is must do for any fan of great rides. The capper was meeting up with a PEZ-Fan who lives nearby for a great day on the bike.

We're long time fans of the Garda Bike Hotel - family run hospitality as only the Italians can offer, top notch riding for all levels, excellent location in the wine country near Verona. But I thought maybe you'd like in a second opinion - so I talked with Calla Barras - serious cyclist and serious traveller - about what makes the Garda Bike Hotel one of Italy's best bike hotels.

For thousands of years, intrepid spirits have crossed the Pyrenees, Alps, and Dolomites—from Hannibal with his mighty elephant herd to the campaigns of Charlemagne and the humble treks undertaken by medieval pilgrims. Today, you’ll see spandex in place of chainmail all over these ranges as cyclists challenge themselves to conquer the bucket-list giants.

What surprised me most about the Fleche Wallonne parcours was just how hard this 200km ‘semi-Classic’ is. There’s nothing ‘semi’ about it… It deserves the prime time and throws up 11 rated climbs, including 3 passes over a 1300 meter brute called the Mur de Huy. Here’s how it happened to me…

The first day of the PEZ & Velo Classic "Giro della Gazzetta" cycling trip this May opens with a day in Milano - watching the Giro d'Italia final TT stage in one of the world's most fashionable cities. The entertainment never stops here, and viewing the race will be just part of an awesome opening day.

A little different ride for me - on studded tires and a frozen Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis. I'm here with Priority Bikes and Le Meridien Chambers Hotel to launch their new bikes for guests program.

The opening riding days of the "Giro della Gazzetta" - the first Velo Classic Tours & Pez cycling trip this May starts with two days riding the final 175km of the monumental Milan-San Remo corsa.  After a day watching the Giro final stage in Milan, we leave the Lombard plain and cross the coastal mountains. Smelling the sea-salt air of the Mediterranean for the first time is an amazing experience.

Riding across the Pyrenees from cost to coast and back is one of the all time epic rides - eat, sleep, ride, repeat. It's a road cyclist's dream that PEZ-Fan Richard Watson lived for two weeks 2016, and now takes us along for the ride.

Long time PEZ-fans know how we feel about riding in Italy - and why over the years we've logged enough of our own travel miles around the Italian boot to open our own travel agency. We've stayed a a lot of hotels there and can tell you with complete confidence that the Garda Bike Hotel is one of the best.

TOP RIDE: I'm still basking in the afterglow of the 2016 RBC Gran Fondo Whistler - a big goal accomplished in better form than I'd expected. And after weeks of prep, and all the logistics of coordinating the family for the weekend, and over 5 hours on my bike, it all went by a little too fast.
