Stage Report: There was no fairytale for France as South Africa's Daryl Impey won stage 9 of the Tour de France in Brioude on Sunday - Bastille Day. After more than 170 kilometres, the South African was the best of a big break. Impey beat Tiesj Benoot after the two broke away from their fellow escapees on the final climb. Julian Alaphilippe finish with the peloton to keep his overall lead.

Daryl Impey finished in a front group of 16 riders on stage six of the Tour de France to move into the race lead. The South African becomes the first African to wear the Tour’s yellow jersey. Simon Gerrans led out Matt Goss for the sprint and conceded five seconds to Impey when the bunch split before the line.

Daryl Impey put his stamp on stage two of Bayern Rundfahrt, taking his third win of the season in commanding fashion. The stage victory now puts him in the overall leader’s jersey with three stages to go in the tour. Two wins in the early part of the season, stage two Pais Vasco and the South African Time Trial Championship, demonstrated that Impey is very capable of winning races over varied terrain. Today’s win in Germany shows that his form is back after taking a long break from racing while at home with his wife and new baby.
