Jeff's UCI Track Adventure: The UCI took the second round of the 2017 Tissot track World Cup to the Milton Velodrome in Canada and PEZ was there for all the fun. Photographer Jeff Green was track-side in the National Cycling Centre with his lens ready to tell the story.

Photos and words by Jeff Green.

Avoiding the track is a challenge. While I grind away on sunny Watopia Island, courtesy of Zwift, many of my fair weather road friends are full-on at the track. Some of the gang are putting in 80k's over 2 hours. I'm getting a bit concerned that come spring I'll be left behind by the track boys.

The Milton Velodrome, aka The Mattamy National Cycling Center, was born for the 2015 Pan Am Games and has quickly found a dedicated following in southern Ontario. Located a 45 minute drive from Toronto ("Tarawna" to the locals), in ever expanding Milton, Ontario, the $63 million dollar covered track is considered to be the best in North America. It's new, sleek, modern, and with it's carefully selected boards, courtesy of a generous forest in Siberia, and state of the art climate control, it's fast, very fast.

To say that's it's a miracle that it was built at all is no understatement. The failed, and dismantled, or maybe disemboweled is a better word, (it was ripped apart on a sad day 1989) velodrome in Montreal-home to the 1976 Olympics - was a harsh reminder to municipal governments just how financially fickle track cycling can be. But if this weekends UCI event is any indicator, local track cycling is destined to be huge in Ontario and will surely spawn the next generation of superstar Canadian pro cyclists.

The future

I've been to the track a number of times, often to take in the action and/or to take some photos, but this past weekend was something special. As I was about to enter the venue I ran into Canadian track legend Curt Harnett and I asked him how things are going. His quick response "It's fantastic in there!". He wasn't kidding, from the moment I entered the decibel meter was off the scale as the packed house cheered on their favorites. I don't tear up often but there is something about watching Canadians competing in sporting events that really get's to me. Usually it's watching the NHL playoffs or an Olympic broadcast, but I have to say that seeing all those light-blue skinsuits adorned with our blazing red maple leaf was really something special. Canadian pride Eh!

I wasn't originally scheduled to attend the event but some last minute emails to Mr. Pez changed all that. In short order, and thanks to the wonderful Karine at Canadian Cycling, I had a media pass in one hand and a new, fantabulous, Fuji X-T20 camera, with vintage Contax/Zeiss glass, in the other. Manual focus lenses are back - right beside vinyl records, 35mm film, and boomboxes.

The "drome" as I like to call it, is a truly amazing facility, but, and I say this as a photographer, the lighting leaves a lot to be desired. Knowing the Fuji excels at black & white imaging made the choice simple. Given my last minute access I didn't have a photog's bib so any pics from the cote d'azur (the blue perimeter beside the track ) was off limits. But that's okay and it worked out for the better as I was able to concentrate on the, behind the scenes, candid moments that told the story within the story.

I'll stop writing now so you can enjoy my photos. Mille Grazie! (Everything sounds better in Italian).
