GIRO’18 Stage 15: Triple Stage Yates!
Race Report: Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) won his third 2018 Giro d'Italia stage into Sappada, but more importantly he gained more time on his main rivals. Time trial World champion Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) lost 41 seconds to the Englishman and is now at 2:11. Domenico Pozzovivo (Bahrain-Merida) and Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) were also in the same group ad the Dutchman and are at 2:28 and 2:37. Chris Froome (Sky), Zoncolan winner and birthday boy, lost contact and is now in 7th place overall at 4:52.

Happy birthday Chris Froome

This stage across the Dolomites features a steady series of climbs and descents with just one uncomplicated stretch, namely the long false flat drag leading to Cortina d’Ampezzo. The route takes in several consecutive climbs: Passo della Mauria, Passo Tre Croci, Passo di Sant’Antonio (for the first time along this side, with gradients exceeding 10% over long stretches) and Costalissoio (short and very steep, a first-ever pass).

Stage 15 – Tolmezzo-Sappada 176km - total elevation 4,000m

After descending into San Pietro di Cadore, the route follows the Piave river all the way to Sappada, heading for the finish. All the roads are relatively wide and well surfaced, with a number of uphill and downhill hairpins.

Final kilometers
The final 10km run entirely uphill. After passing through a tunnel (partly open on one side), the route climbs at gradients of around 9% for a few kilometers and then reaches the centre of Sappada, where the road eventually levels out in the final kilometer. The home straight (450m) is on 6.5m-wide asphalt road.

41 seconds on Tom Dumoulin for Simon Yates

Stage winner and overall leader, Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott): “My attack was a little bit on instinct. I saw a little gap. I gave everything the second time to get away. It's fantastic. I feel emotional after today. I've been fighting since Israel to build a good lead. I'm happy with the gap I have now but it's far from over. It could vanish in 35 kilometres.”
