The break of the day escaped early in the stage, it included: Eddie Dunbar (Aqua Blue Sport), Willie Smit (Katusha-Alpecin), Paul Ourselin (Direct Énergie) and Nathan Brown (Education First-Drapac). They could only gain 2 minutes as the sprinter's team; Lotto Soudal, Quick-Step Floors and Bora-Hansgrohe kept them close.

Brown lost contact 15 kilometers out and when Smit and Dunbar started attacking in the final 10K it was the end of their adventure in the last 5 kilometers.

Groupama-FDJ and Bora-Hansgrohe were the first teams to take control until Quick-Step pushed through for Gaviria with Maximilano Richeze piloting him towards the line. Démare, Kristoff and Sagan were on the Colombian wheel, Démare pulled level with Gaviria and had the speed to pass for the win. Sagan left it too late and finished fourth.

Richie Porte gores into the final 34 kilometer time trial stage in Bellinzona with a 17 second advantage over Nairo Quintana (Movistar), 52 on Wilco Kelderman (Sunweb) and 53 on Enric Mas (Quick Step Floors).
