Six riders made up the early break: Damiano Cima (Nippo-Vini Fantini), Michele Gazzara (Sangemini-MG.Kvis), Chun Kai Feng (Bahrain-Merida), Darwin Atapuma (UAE Team Emirates), Umberto Orsini (Bardiani-CSF) and Miguel Eduardo Florez (Wilier Triestina-Selle Italia). They had 2 minutes at the first climb where Gazzara was first ahead of Cima with Feng and Atapuma, Orsini and Florez just behind. Gazzara took the points again at the second KOM with Feng and Orsini in second and third.

The leaders only had 0:45 seconds on the peloton with 40 flat kilometers to the finish, and so Quick-Step Floors and Dimension Data took over the chase for their sprinters. The race was all together with two laps of the finish circuit to go. Quick-Step and Dimension Data fought it out for the sprint, but the Italian was too good for Mark Cavendish at the line. Sosa was safe in the peloton for the final overall win.
