Travel Feature: Crossing the Dolomites
dolomites650 The dramatic landscape, quaint alpine villages, fierce rock formations and a long and celebrated Giro d’Italia history make the Dolomites the ultimate European cycling destination. Thomson Travel’s Peter Thomson takes us on a trip through this magical mountain range.

***Special travel feature from Peter Thomson, of Thomson Bike Tours***

Thomson Bike Tours presents the final feature of a three part series of our spring tours that celebrate the majesty, the history and the drama of Europe’s most famed routes and races. Let us make your cycling dreams a reality.

Act 3 The Dolomites: A Cycling Fantasy

Once Upon a Time…
Straight out of a fairy tale, the Dolomites (Northern Italian Alps) have the scenery, mystique and character to inspire any imagination. The sharp profile of the mountain range is counterbalanced by beautiful windy roads and a warm and inviting alpine scene. Famous Swiss architect Le Corbusier called the Dolomites, “the most beautiful natural architecture worldwide.” He was referring to the distinctive, jagged silhouette that erupts from the landscape and creates a breathtaking play of light.

At Thomson Bike Tours, we fell under the spell of this fantastic region years ago and are delighted to offer our guests a spectacularly challenging week in the stunning Dolomites. We will be crossing the mountain chain twice this year, in June and September. Our years of experience allow us to provide optimal routes, support and accommodation as our guests discover for themselves what magical cycling destination lies in the landscape of Northern Italy.

We’ll be riding over 400 miles and clicking off over 51,000 ft of climbing on our 2013 Trans-Dolomites Challenge . Don’t be intimidated: the suffering is temporary and the memories will last a lifetime. It is the ultimate cycling adventure!

The Magic
The mirror-like turquoise mountain lakes reflect the beauty that surrounds them. As you carve your way to the peak of these mythical climbs, you’ll experience the equivalent of a cycling euphoria. Breath-taking views reward your efforts and make you feel on top of the world! (which you are)! See our day-to-day trip itinerary here!

The Royalty
Since the late 1930’s, the Giro d’Italia has routed the world’s greatest cyclists through the Dolomites to test their strength on these mythical climbs. Whether it be a tribute to Pantani, remnants of pink decorations or the names of your favorites painted on the road before you, evidence of the rich cycling history will be everywhere you look. You cannot help but be reminded what great moments in cycling took place on these very routes!

The Villains
The Stelvio, the Gavia, the Mortirolo, the Giau, just to name a few. The Dolomites are home to some of the most wicked climbs in the sport. Lance Armstrong, while on a training expedition in the Dolomites, preparing for the 2004 Tour de France, famously called the Mortirolo “the hardest climb I have ever ridden.” The profile of the Giro d’Italia is much steeper than the Tour. At this kind of severe altitude, there have been a handful of extreme weather days for the Giro. Who can forget Andy Hamsten’s epic day on the Gavia? It is a badge of honor for any cyclist to reach the summit of these fierce and unrelenting ascents. The view from the top and the thrilling descent down make it worth all the trouble!

Happily Ever After
Don’t miss out on the opportunity to challenge yourself on the cycling’s most celebrated and spectacular peaks. You’ll come home with tired legs and a suitcase of memories. Make new friends from all around the world while experiencing the exhilaration of going above and beyond your wildest cycling dreams. Take the Thomson Bike Tours Trans-Dolomites Challenge, you’ll load up your Strava account and go home with bragging rights.

The Reviews

“Challenging but thrilling rides, excellent support staff, and great ride leaders.”
Matthew Maccaroni – VA : 2010 Trans-Dolomites Challenge

“Trip was totally amazing and memorable. I had no idea that it would be so awe inspiring and beautiful. I thought the staff all possessed the perfect amount of support and friendliness, while at the same time not over-managing the riders. I was treated with the respect I was hoping for as an experienced rider that did not need to be too closely monitored. I really appreciate that. I felt like it was my own personal journey with my cycling friends, but I also felt the amazing guidance and support of the staff. The balance was perfect.” Joe Pugliese – CA : 2010 Trans-Dolomites Challenge

“I suppose the best way to summarize my experience is this: By the time we were half-way through the trip, I was on the Thomson website trying to figure out which trip I might want to take next year.” Paul Klenck – CO : 2010 Trans-Dolomites Challenge

“Thomson is the best. Super great rides, knowledgeable and friendly staff throughout who gave us every detail of every ride and kept our bikes running great, food and accomodations were first-rate. All I had to concentrate on was riding my bike, which I had to do a lot of because the rides could not have been a better blend of challenge and spectacular scenery, which is what I paid for.” Kevin Smith – VA, USA : 2011 Trans-Dolomites Challenge
