Thomson Bike Tours: Escape to Spain for just $570!
Barcelona Spring Training: Just about every European pro team hosts their winter training camp on the Mediterranean coast in Spain. Peter Thomson, owner of Thomson Bike Tours, reveals how you can emulate the pros and spend a spring-training week on the Spanish Mediterranean without breaking the family budget….

– Special Travel Feature By Peter Thomson of Thomson Bike Tours –

Barcelona Spring Training

Where: Our training camp is based in the Penedes wine region, just 40km south of Barcelona. With over 300 days of sunshine per year, an extremely dry, mild climate and an abundance of quiet, hilly, traffic-free roads, the Penedes is the ideal location for a spring training camp.

When: The camp runs for 2 weeks, from March 12 to March 27. Riders are welcome to join us at any time during this 2 week window.

And most important – how much does it cost: Prices start at just $570 per person for a week-long training camp.

The Training Routes

Watch the video of Peter Thomson riding our training routes:

Our routes provide the perfect training ground for Performance Cyclists. Top Spanish pros like Joaquim Rodriguez , Xavier Tondo and Juan-Antonio Flecha live close by and use these very routes to prepare for their race season.

Our training rides leave from the beach-front at 9:00am every morning. Our daily rides head inland through the Penedes vineyards and into the Sierras that lie between the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees Mountains. The roads are extremely quiet and virtually traffic-free, and the constant climbing makes for a fantastic work-out! Typical daily rides are from 100 to 140km with 1500 to 2500m of elevation gain.

Climb the “Hors-Categorie” Rat Penat!

This one is for the climbers!

Rat Penat is an HC (hors-categorie) climb situated just 15km from our Spring Training Camp base.

For the ultimate climbing experience, join our guides on the Rat’s +20% slopes – the favourite training ground of many Spanish pros!

In September, Stage 10 of the 2010 Vuelta a Espana included the climb up Rat Penat. Watch how top climbers Vincenzo Nibali, Joaquim Rodriguez and Igor Anton faired on the Rat:

Flexible Accommodations

In these tough economic times we’ve made our training camps more accessible by offering self-catering apartments.

Share a 4-person apartment and pay just $570 per person for a week-long stay, or share a 2-person apartment and pay $750 per person per week.

Hotel accommodations are also available at the 4-star Hotel Calipolis.

See the following table for full pricing details:

Apartments: Ideal for couples or groups, our apartments are modern and newly furnished. The apartments are located in different parts of Sitges but all are situated in the downtown area within 5 minutes walking distance from the beach and town center.
