The first day of the PEZ & Velo Classic "Giro della Gazzetta" cycling trip this May opens with a day in Milano - watching the Giro d'Italia final TT stage in one of the world's most fashionable cities. The entertainment never stops here, and viewing the race will be just part of an awesome opening day.

The 2017 Tour de France pays a visit to southwest France with a stage finish in the medieval town of Bergerac along the Dordogne River, and the following day a stage start in nearby Eymet. Allan Reeves of FranceFromInside.com cycling tours is looking to combine his family's nearby Chateau de Pitray and Le Tour for a week of cycling, wine and French living.

How's this for something completely different - a mid-winter trip to Minneapolis to ride stud-tired commuter bikes around the city's vast network of bike paths? It was part of the new bikes for guests program by Le Meridien Chambers Hotel featuring Priority Bicycles.

The opening riding days of the "Giro della Gazzetta" - the first Velo Classic Tours & Pez cycling trip this May starts with two days riding the final 175km of the monumental Milan-San Remo corsa.  After a day watching the Giro final stage in Milan, we leave the Lombard plain and cross the coastal mountains. Smelling the sea-salt air of the Mediterranean for the first time is an amazing experience.

I'm looking ahead to my big rides for 2017, and there's no better place to aim for than Italy. I've always loved the Ligurian Coast, and its mix of hills flats, sea-salt air and palm trees, and have logged many a top ride here - including this hilly jaunt over the Passo del Termine from Levanto.

Join Pez & Velo Classic for the 100th Giro d'Italia and an Italian cycling holiday we call the "Giro della Gazzetta", from May 27 -  June 4, 2017. We start in Milan to see the final TT stage of the Giro, then ride south to the sea and two days on the Milan San Remo route before turning inland to climb through the Alps on some of the cycling's most iconic climbs, peaking with the gravel switchbacks of the Colle della Finestre.

The Hotel Lungomare in Cesenatico offers a top bike hotel experience on Italy's Adriatic coast - daily guided bike tours for all levels through hills, vineyards and olive groves, tough climbs like the Carpegna, packages for gran fondos like the Nove Colle, and Italian hospitality in a family run hotel. Here's a closer look...

Best of 2016: Inside the last 3km to the summit of the 21.5km Col du Glandon, the air gets thin as we approach 1924m elevation, the road tilts to 11% grades, and each meter seems longer than the last one. There's a reason they call this one 'Hors Category'.

Riding across the Pyrenees from cost to coast and back is one of the all time epic rides - eat, sleep, ride, repeat. It's a road cyclist's dream that PEZ-Fan Richard Watson lived for two weeks 2016, and now takes us along for the ride.

Ever thought of visiting Japan and taking your bike along for the trip? If so, Lee Rodgers has the lowdown on the land of the Rising Sun... on two wheels. Japan has everything for the discerning cyclist, climbs, flat valleys, quiet roads and all with a picturesque back drop. Only one problem; it's too cold in December for Lee coming from a humid Taiwan.

Lowdown: A slightly different Lowdown from Lee Rodgers today, no doping, his thoughts on Taiwan as a cycling holiday destination... Good and bad! The island the Portuguese called Formosa - ‘beautiful island’ - might not be on your bucket list yet, so let Lee change your mind.

Monday in Gent, the morning after the night before - The Six is over. But the adventure for Callum and Dave goes on: No, not a cyclocross or another pub, but a church! A church in praise of the sport of cycling. The Wielermuseum in Roeslare is no shinny display, like the Centrum Ronde van Vlaanderen, Roeslare is more for the hardened Flandrien of the cobbled road.

Wild Rock Travel has been hosting and guiding cycling trips around Europe's best roads for almost 25 years, and while other tour operators have grown their businesses based on a global reach of clients, Wild Rock's focus on Canadian customers offers lower priced trips often overlooked by higher priced competitors. But with their trips all priced in Canadian bucks, they makes sense for anyone who loves riding, eating and drinking in Europe - no matter what country you're from.

Long time PEZ-fans know how we feel about riding in Italy - and why over the years we've logged enough of our own travel miles around the Italian boot to open our own travel agency. We've stayed a a lot of hotels there and can tell you with complete confidence that the Garda Bike Hotel is one of the best.

Travel: Once again the Taiwan KOM Challenge has come and gone and riders from around the World are looking back to their climb through Taroko Gorge and up to the 3275 meter Wuling Summit, but there is much more to cycling in Taiwan than just one magical climb. Matt McNamara took a tour of Formosa recently to see for himself.

Lombardia Ride: Sometimes you gotta point the car at the cliff and give ‘er some stick. Okay, maybe heading out for an awesome solo ride may not be quite the same... but sometimes heading into the unknown is best approached with a ‘give ‘er’ attitude, and as I once again learned on this awesome ride around Lago di Como, the rewards can be worthy of a lifetime.

TOP RIDE: I'm still basking in the afterglow of the 2016 RBC Gran Fondo Whistler - a big goal accomplished in better form than I'd expected. And after weeks of prep, and all the logistics of coordinating the family for the weekend, and over 5 hours on my bike, it all went by a little too fast.

“Eighteen and a half kilometers to enter the myth,” reported RCS Sport, describing this year’s return of the Gran Fondo La Marmotte–Sestriere–Colle delle Finistre cyclo sportive ride on July 24th, the second edition. Over 1,000 riders set out and PEZ talked to two of them for a riders' perspective on a Top Ride.

Tour Stage Preview: The ASO certainly knows how to put on a spectacle. Each year, the Grand Depart is feted and celebrated, usually more for its cultural iconography than its significance for the actual race itself. So if setting the table at Mont St Michel, then it is only fitting to conclude the world’s most popular bike race in the shadow of Europe’s most iconic mountain, Mont Blanc.

One of the best reasons for choosing a good bike hotel is their skill to show me the best their region has to offer - like routes, rides, food & drink that I simply could not find on my own. This ride (and subsequent wine tasting) never would have have happened without my guide from Garda Bike Hotel leading me on a relaxed ride through the hills of valpolicella and an even more relaxed stop at the Santa Maria Valverde winery.
