The day the sprinters had been waiting for finally arrived in Madrid and it was Michael Matthews from Down Under who came through and took stage win number two. The stage belonged to Matthews but the Vuelta belonged to Chris Horner who claimed the biggest win of his long career.

It's just a shame that Joaquim Rodriguez lost so much time early on in this extraordinary Vuelta Espana; Purito produced a trademark last-gasp acceleration to snare the stage win today as Vincenzo Nibali and Chris Horner continued to throw heavyweight hooks at each other. Today, it was the American who landed the biggest blows, battering his Italian rival out of the red leader's jersey.

With a rest day in the Vuelta today it's time to look back at the superb three days of racing we had in the Pyrenees. The weather mightn't have been to everyone's tastes but there's no denying the quality of racing that we've witnessed at the Vuelta so far. This race just keeps getting better and better with the final result still from certain with less than a week to go.
