Race Preview: Tour de San Luis 2014. The World Tour may be kicking off Down Under in Australia at the TDU this week but there's also another big tour starting Monday, the Tour de San Luis in Argentina. With such big names as Nibali, Sagan, Cavendish, Boonen and more heading to the race, it's worth taking a closer look at what's ahead of them - and even making a few predictions while we're at it.
Next Monday six Lotto Belisol riders will stand at the start of the Tour de San Luis. This stage race of seven days takes place in the middle of Argentina. On day two there is a finish on Mirador del Potrero, a first category climb. Two days later the climb to Alto del Amago, also a mountain of first category, will decide about the stage win. After a time trial of 19,2 km there is one last tough stage to Mirador del Sol. In the other stages there are opportunities for sprinters.
The team, that will be directed by Orlando Maini, is characterized by two spirits: the Italian one, represented by Cunego, Modolo and Pozzato, and the South American one, with Anacona, Richeze and Serpa.
The riders and Directeur Sportif's for the Argentinean race.
A super fast OPQS will be lining up for the eighth edition of the Tour de San Luis. With Cavendish, Boonen and Petacchi the Belgian formation will bring together no less than 400 victories, 2 Milano Sanremo races, 4 Paris-Roubaix, 3 Tour de Flandres, 2 in-line World Championships and 3 green jerseys at the Tour de France. Until now we've never seen a trio quite like this.
Veteran rider Haimar Zubeldia will be heading the American formation on the roads of the Tour de San Luis. The Spanish climber was born in 1977. He has participated in the Tour de France ten times, coming in fifth in both 2003 and 2007, while in 2012 he placed sixth.
The American juggernaut BMC will benefit from two outstanding leaders on their team: the new entry Darwin Atapuma, but especially the up-and-coming Taylor Phinney. The young American Chrono Man has already won a stage in the 2012 Giro d’Italia, where he led the race for three days. He has two silver medals to his name from the 2012 World Championship Time Trial races: in the individual and team divisions. He also wore the World Championship colours in the Under 23 individual time trial competition in 2010.
