Roadside Report: After the cold and rain of Saturday's 'Flanders Classics' Het Nieuwsblad, Sunday dawned clear and sunny for a perfect day of racing action roadside in Belgium at the Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne.
Bar l'Ecluse, Ronse on a February Sunday afternoon and the tattooed guy is drinking beer and playing pool; just like last year. The big TV up in the corner tells as that there are 48 K of Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne to go - that's an hour of racing but already we're saying; 'bunch sprint.'
Day two of the Belgian Classics opener saw more cobbled action under typically gray skies, culminating in a streaking blue finish. Quickstep made their presence felt in the closing kms as they powered the peloton to bring back the escapees and set up Boonen for the win. But anyone watching saw Tom’s lead-out man Gert Steegmans was clearly the fastest.
