I'm looking ahead to my big rides for 2017, and there's no better place to aim for than Italy. I've always loved the Ligurian Coast, and its mix of hills flats, sea-salt air and palm trees, and have logged many a top ride here - including this hilly jaunt over the Passo del Termine from Levanto.
Our PEZman in Italy, Alessandro Federico, will be roadside this weekend as the Giro d'Italia winds its way north. Last year he made the trip south and passed through many different regions to catch the race, the people, the villages and the atmosphere of the biggest bike race in Italy. But you can't go to the South without trying the pizza!
The mid-winter break is a good time to check the archives and remember some of our best days of the season past. For me it was the opening week of the Giro d'Italia along the shimmering Ligurian coast. The opening stage Team Time Trial at the Big Start in San Remo returned some of my favorite images from one of the world's most picturesque coastlines.
Nov 26, 2015 - Happy Thanksgiving everyone! But the wheels keep turning and we have a mixed bag of EuroTrash cycling news: The UCI have announce the eighteen WorldTour teams for 2016 and also most of the ProConti squads.
It's Negroni Week across the land (at least that's what they're saying on the interweb), but as I replied to the PEZ-Fans who pointed this out... it's always Negroni Week at PEZ HQ. So what a perfect time to look back at my best negronis of the 2015 Giro d'Italia.
When looking back at the 2015 Giro d'Italia it's hard to think of any negatives. The only 'what if' would be Landa being told to wait for Fabio Aru in a Froome/Wiggins sort of way. Ed and Martin are back home in Scotland and 'happy' to be at their day jobs, so we asked them for the 'Top 12' best things Giro.
The best or craziest Grand Tour of the year (so far) has finished and just like previous stages; it had a rabbit up its sleeve. Lee Rodgers take a good look at the final week and gives us his usual unique view on the 2015 Giro d'Italia. The Roundup of the lowdown.
PEZ Roadside St.21: It's the end of the Giro d'Italia road for the riders and for Ed and Martin. The adventurous pair were in amongst everything in Milano, roadside, backstage, at the busses and as near the finish line and podium as they could get. It's the last day of school in Milan.
Jun 01, 2015 - Pink is the color for Alberto Contador and EuroTrash Monday. We go all the way to Milan with the Giro d'Italia and catch-up with the Belgian Tour and the Fjords. All the video, reports, results and rider quotes to keep you in the race action.
Race Report: The surprises of the 2015 Giro d’Italia continued in the final stage as Iljo Keisse won in Milan from Luke Durbridge in a two-man break. The pink jersey of Alberto Contador crossed the line safely in the bunch to seal his overall victory. Giro done, Tour next.
Giro'15 St.20: There's only one place to watch this penultimate stage of the 2015 Giro d'Italia - and that's on the spiralling slopes of the Colle della Finestre. Ed & Martin battled closed roads and the long way 'round, but made it to the top of one of cycling's most epic climbs.
Race Report: If you're going to have a bad day, you might as well have it when the Giro is all but won. Alberto Contador proved that he has a champion's head as well as heart and brains, hanging tough through a crisis on the Colle delle Finestre. Fabio Aru gave it everything but came up a good two minutes short. The Giro is won!
And to think, this morning started so well... We've been in them all; the hotel from The Shining, leaks, no heating, no hot water, no breakfast, no wi-fi... But last night... "Majestic" by name, majestic by nature, back to a time when hotel staff didn't wear Korn T-shirts and call you; 'mate.'
The Giro has saved the best for last as the race tackles the truly epic Colle della Finestre as the final stage for glory for this year's GC battle. Contador has the race sewn up but a lot can happen on a massive climb of 18km that throws in 8km of dirt road and steep pitches. I first rode this climb in 2005, and it's been on my list of Top Rides ever since.
Stage 19 Race report: After a couple of bad days, when Alberto Contador looked around and saw just how much Fabio Aru was suffering, the young Sardinian romped away in the last few kilometers to win a brutal stage. For Aru the day's spoils, and up a place overall, but Alberto Contador was as comfortable as could be on a lightning-fast ride to Cervinia.
Ed and Martin are into the 'Giro Groove' and have this bike race chasing down to a fine art. They've worked out the best places to see the race, eat pizza & drink beer, plus find the very important coffee and a read of the Gazzetta. Day 3 of their Giro Adventure rolls to Verbania!
Race Report: Just when you thought this Giro couldn’t provide another high-octane thrill ride, the first-category Monte Ologno, fuelled a further chaotic stage. We had it all: breakaways, chases, races within races, dropped chains and thrown-down gauntlets. The maglia rosa on the charge. It was perfect.
May 28, 2015 - The high point of the week had to be the chase back of Contador on the Mortirolo, he turned a deficit into an advantage. Giro, Belgium, Fjords and US Champs with video, results and reports. Hydration is our Top Story with Dr. Cheung. Other cycling news: Paolini, Küng, De Weert, Veloroos and Salem live video.
After missing out on the Mortirolo yesterday, Ed and Martin made point of soaking up the atmosphere at the start in Tirano, before shooting off towards Switzerland. But everyone is still talking about Alberto and the Mortirolo and the guys were taking it all in.
Race Report: Stage 17 could have been a dull day, but it was spiced up by the beautiful views of Lake Lugano and a very exciting last 20 kilometers into Switzerland. Sacha Modolo was given an armchair ride to the line and repaid his team with their fourth stage win.
