By 1943, Italy was in chaos. For even a well-known sporting hero such as Gino Bartali, his public profile was no guarantee of his safety. Yet Bartali chose an even more risky course of action, as foreshadowed in Part 1. He would subsequently go on to even greater sporting and public glory.

ROADSIDE Giro'13 St.3: Yesterday’s scenic boat ride to the even more scenic island of Ischia, served as the perfect appertivo for today’s 222km haul from Sorrento to Marina di Ascea. Today we drove what is possibly the most scenic corsa I’ve seen. Ever.

Race Analysis: At the Giro former teammates Mark Cavendish and Bradley Wiggins experienced vastly different emotions. One is now at home sipping tea whilst the other is sitting pretty in the red points jersey as multiple stage winner. Lee Rodgers takes a closer look at their story.

Race Analysis: This is the Giro d’Italia, right? Cos I think I may have stumbled onto some amazing one day race that I’d never heard of before. It had it all, two cracking little climbs, one brilliant, twisting and quite frankly terrifying-looking descent just before the finish, and enough aggression to keep even those degenerate bare-knuckle fight fans stoked up on adrenaline for a week.

Race Analysis: It was beautiful. The solo break. One man alone on the road. Alone, save for 8 moto outriders, a race director’s car, a team car and thousands of fans of course. And yet, still, essentially, fundamentally alone.

Movistar’s Alex Dowsett showed he has what it takes to ride a perfect time trial in a Grand Tour - in only his first Grand Tour! The man from the South of England lay down the fastest time very early in the day and had to wait for 162 other riders to finish before he knew for sure he had his biggest win in the bag.

Race Report: Vincenzo Nibali showed today that he is the worthy winner of the 2013 Giro d’Italia with a demolishing ride on the steep slopes of the Dolomites. His pink jersey gleamed through the falling snow at the top of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo for the stage win and confirmation of his superb home victory. Another great day on a brilliant Giro d’Italia.

Race Report: Is it all over bar the shouting? The man that some call ‘Nibbles’ took a big bite out of his Giro d’Italia opposition with a storming uphill TT win to Polsa. As Evans suffered in the rain, the pink-clad panther performed with panache to put himself in a position so comfortable, he could be reclining with a cigar, dressed like Hef, being fed grapes by … well, you get the picture.

  • Saturday May 18, 2013

Race Report: The weather beat everyone in today’s Giro d’Italia, especially the TV cameras. In the end it was an exciting stage, although knowing what was happening was not easy. When the Pink jersey of Vincenzo Nibali came out of the clouds with Mauro Santambrogio we knew there had been a battle royal and the Sicilian had come out on top. Santambrogio took the stage honours and Nibali had the time on his adversaries.
