This Wednesday sees the start of two European stage races, one of those being the five-day Bayern Fundfahrt. The German race gets straight into the action with a tough 201.6km stage from Vilshofen to Freilassing where the succession of short climbs may see the first small splits occurring in the race.

Gerald Ciolek won not only the stage but also took over the lead at the International Bayern Rundfahrt (May 22-26 / UCI 2.HC), giving Team MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung its first yellow jersey of this cycling season. The Milan-San Remo winner took his third win of the season in an exciting sprint finale at the only German professional stage race.
Daryl Impey put his stamp on stage two of Bayern Rundfahrt, taking his third win of the season in commanding fashion. The stage victory now puts him in the overall leader’s jersey with three stages to go in the tour. Two wins in the early part of the season, stage two Pais Vasco and the South African Time Trial Championship, demonstrated that Impey is very capable of winning races over varied terrain. Today’s win in Germany shows that his form is back after taking a long break from racing while at home with his wife and new baby.
It was downpouring during most of the 193.9km of the first stage of the Bayern Rundfahrt. The Spaniard Javier Megias from Team Novo Nordisk was able to start the stage race fantastically. As part of a four-man breakaway group which got away from the peloton only 8km after the start of the race in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm.
For Bayern Rundfahrt, Team LAMPRE-MERIDA chose top quality selection that will have its best in the trio Cunego-Ulissi-Malori and that will rely on the solidity of Bono, Cimolai and Mori.
Team Novo Nordisk comes back to Europe. After an incredible performance of the team during the Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey in Asia and the Tour of the Gila in the United States, it now heads to the Bayern Rundfahrt (Tour of Bavaria). It will be the first race in Germany for the world’s first all-diabetes professional cycling team.
Following on his success with a stage win in the Glava Tour of Norway, Theo Bos is looking for more. He is looking to pick up a bouquet or two in the Bayern Rundfahrt with is level stages starting on Wednesday, 22 May.
Milan-San Remo winner Gerald Ciolek will lead Team MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung in the 34th edition of the International Bayern Rundfahrt (May 22-26 / UCI 2.HC). The team has selected an experienced squad to support the German sprinter, due to the fact that the race has attracted some of the best riders in the world.
