Colorado’17 St.1: The Garden Of The Gods!
Colorado Classic'17: PEZ photographer, Darrell Parks, has moved on from the Tour of Utah to the Colorado Classic for stage 1 based in Colorado Springs. Two races; both the men and the women hit the tough circuit through the Garden of the Gods and here is Darrell's photographers report:

(Above) The women's race saw more action at the back of the peloton due to the high pace and the altitude. Escapes tried, but failed.

The men's Colorado Classic 2017 started from Colorado Springs with a 25 kilometers circuit, going through Garden of the Gods (altitude from 1800 to 2000 meters), to be completed for 6 times. The race exploded from the start. There were two important breaks, but stage 1 was always tipped to be a bunch sprint.

The climb to the Garden of the Gods was fast, discouraging too many breaks and eventually pulling back any that succeeded (for a short time).

The descent was also fast.

6 riders made the most important action of the day, gaining 4 minute from the rest of the group. After more than 100 kilometers, the escapees were pulled back by the peloton in the final two laps.

The break fought hard through the Garden of the Gods, but they could not hold out.

During the final climb on the last circuit, the sun was replaced by the rain, Ivan Santaromita (Nippo-Vini Fantini), Manuel Senni (BMC) and Simone Petilli (UAE Team Emirates) made the second important move of the day. This second breakaway ended 500 meters from the finish line and the final sprint started, managed by the Holowesko team.

At the end of the women's 61 kilometer race, Jennifer Valente (Sho-Air Twenty20) was the fastest from the peloton with Skylar Schneider (Iscorp Powered by Progress) and Emma White (Rally Cycling) on her heels.

John Murphy (Holowesko-Citadel) won the stage from Travis McCabe (UnitedHealthcare), Logan Owen (Axeon Hagens Berman) and Marco Canola (Nippo-Vini Fantini) in 4th place.

Logan Owen was best 'Young Rider' and was presented with the famous Phinney couple; Davis and Connie.

The men's podium of 1st John Murphy (Holowesko-Citadel), 2nd Travis McCabe (UnitedHealthcare) and 3rd Logan Owen (Axeon Hagens Berman).
