California’08 St.2: A Tale Of Two T’s
It was a wet, nasty, cold day for the Californian sojourners making their way ’round the Golden State. The typical longshot efforts of the early aggressors paved the way for another bunch sprint, and so it was. In the end, Tom Boonen was the victor and Tyler Farrar was the jubilant overall leader.

It was a groundbreaking day for the two T’s. Tom Boonen took his first ever win on North American soil in fine fashion, whilst Slipstream’s Tyler Farrar battled it out in the intermediate sprints and netted the overall lead by day’s end. So it was a good day for Boonen, but a huge, momentous day for the Slipstream squad and the 23-year-old Farrar.

The Important Stuff

Hey hey Tommeke! Going into the Classics in just over a month’s time, it’s not just the Cancellara Show.

And then there was Mario Cipollini, back on the podium after 3 years of retirement and 41 years of age, but his name doesn’t have a T in it. Maybe next time.

Two of the big stories by the end of the day got a little shoulder to shoulder riding early on in the day.

From The Beginning, Shall We?

It was wet. There would be no tanning today.

The field got an early kick in the cojones with the climb of Trinity Grade.

Scott Nydam enjoyed the Trinity Grade all by his lonesome, in fact, he enjoyed most of the stage all by his lonesome. That’s two days in a row that a BMC rider has done the lonely.

Jonny Sundt had a go of it on Trinity Grade and netted himself 2nd place KOM points.

Over the top, there were some strained faces.

Oh, and back at base camp, Oscar Sevilla and Santiago Botero still weren’t racing.

Seems everybody is pulling for Slipstream these days.

And The Big Sequence

The second intermediate sprint (in Davis) got Farrar the lead on the road. After leading him out, David Millar radioed back the big news to the team car. Pretty cool.

Late in the day, after Nydam rejoined the festival of bikers, Bouygues Telecom’s Turgot had a go of it. Turgot rapidly got himself some daylight, hit the one minute mark, and then instead of the field chasing him down, he promptly flatted. So it goes.

Onward into Sacramento!

A little early for Cavendish? You betcha.
