One of my best days race chasing happened at the 2013 Giro d'Italia as my driver Mino and I crossed the ankle of southern Italy's boot. The tiny road we chose eventually disappeared, leaving us to find our way across uncharted farm tracks to a distant hill top town. We didn't accomplish much, but it's days like these that make the journey worth every wrong turn.
Two gran fondo amateur events on the roads of the Giro d’Italia stage to take place on 2 August. Enrolment now open on www.gfsestriere.it.
Race Report: Just when you thought this Giro couldn’t provide another high-octane thrill ride, the first-category Monte Ologno, fuelled a further chaotic stage. We had it all: breakaways, chases, races within races, dropped chains and thrown-down gauntlets. The maglia rosa on the charge. It was perfect.
Race Report: Stage 17 could have been a dull day, but it was spiced up by the beautiful views of Lake Lugano and a very exciting last 20 kilometers into Switzerland. Sacha Modolo was given an armchair ride to the line and repaid his team with their fourth stage win.
Book Review: For those of us who love the Giro d’Italia, the final day always come too soon and then the Tour comes and pink is replaced by yellow. Thanks to “Maglia Rosa: Triumph and Tragedy at the Giro d’Italia” by British author/Italian resident Herbie Sykes we have an English-language history of the Giro d’Italia.
When 2015 Giro d'Italia route was announced last October our most experienced Grand Tour reporter, Ed Hood, gave us his first look (full preview next Wednesday). This year's Italian tour is mostly in the north, but in Ed's own words: "There’s something for everyone in the 2015 Giro!"
The 2014 Giro d'Italia's Irish sojourn came to a close after three stages and our own Gordan Cameron was on hand to take it all in with Marcel Kittel being the sorriest rider to leave after two awesome sprint victories. After crossing from the north into the land of bilingual roadsigns, Euros, and kilometers not miles, Gordan was also sorry to see the Giro return home.
Jun 02, 2014 - Colombia has dominated the Giro d’Italia with first and second overall, young rider and mountains jerseys and we have all the best comments, reports and video from Italy. In other cycling news we round-up the Baloise Belgium Tour and the Bayern Rundfahrt. EuroTrash coffee time!
Roadside St. 21: The final day had arrived, the 2014 edition of the Giro was coming to an end. Although we only covered the last six 6 days, we have come away as complete fans. It is such a different event to either the Tour de France or the Tour Down Under. It’s Italian-ness is what sets it apart as unique.
Giro'14 St.21 Race Report: With all eyes on Nacer Bouhanni (FDJ.fr) to take the stage win, it was yet another fast man from Giant-Shimano, Luka Mezgec who showed them all how to do it, while Columbia's Nairo Quintana won his first Grand Tour.
Race Report: In the manner of a champion, Nairo Quintana consolidated his grip on the maglia rosa with victory in the brutal 26.8 kilometre mountain time trial to Cima Grappa – but it was no runaway win, with rising Sardinian star Fabio Aru running him to just 17 seconds to grab 2nd on the day and place himself just 41 seconds behind 2nd placed on GC Rigoberto Uran who was 3rd on this day of judgement.
Race Report: The Colombians have taken over the Giro and today Julian Arredondo took the stage and sealed his KOM title. In the GC; Quintana and Uran finished safely to retain 1st and 2nd overall leaving the others to fight over the podium crumbs. Another day of top action from the Giro!
Race Report: The peloton took a day off after the recent mountain efforts and let a big group head off up the road where it was Stefano Pirazzi who won Bardiani’s third stage of this year’s Giro. Today was the calm after and before the storm...
Chaos reigned on top of Stelvio, on the descent from the Cima Coppi and in the valley leading to the final climb. The 16th stage of Giro d’Italia was a beautiful and dramatic stage but turned controversial after the race jury announced that the descent would be neutralized. The vast majority of the teams heard it and followed the order from the race organizers but few teams including Movistar, Garmin and Europcar attacked on top of Passo dello Stelvio.
In consideration of audio recordings of instructions relayed to Directeurs sportifs during today's stage, the Directors of the Giro d'Italia would like to clarify that Race Radio provided an inaccurate interpretation of the indications stipulated by the Directors.
Race Report: Brutal weather and three huge mountains made for an epic day that saw Nairo Quintana & Ryder Hesjedal duel to the Val Martello summit finish, and the Columbian take over the maglia rosa. It was another crazy day in the Italian mountains, snow, freezing temperatures and more, but action aplenty!
The 2014 Giro d’Italia’s grand finale will include two major events on Sunday June 1 in Trieste. Following the race finale, the Corsa Rosa will host two unique shows to close its 97th edition in style.
