Interview: Second in our 'Best of British' cyclo-cross riders is Chris Wreghitt. He broke the stranglehold that John Atkins held on the National championships at only 18 years of age and still at school. From then on he was Britain's best man in the winter mud until a back injury in 1984 forced him out of the sport at only 25. Ed Hood got the full story from school cycling to the World championships.

November arrives as the halfway point for the USA Cycling Professional Cyclo-cross Calendar (Pro CX), the highest level of professional cyclo-cross racing in the United States. This year’s Pro CX calendar features 44 scoring events, with a total of 23 races completed since September.

The cyclocross season is now in full swing with an on-going battle between World champion Wout Van Aert and Dutch champion Mathieu Van der Poel, but Ed Hood has gone back to Britain in the 60s and 70s to talk to multi-champion John Atkins. Life was different in those days and the cyclo-cross racing was hard, there was no carbon and electric gears in those days!

Don’t start in a hole! Cyclocross is great fun and makes for some excellent fall training, but be careful and smartly manage your fatigue if you just completed a full season of road or MTB racing.
Face it: cross hurts! Not only does it require strong mental and physical toughness, it also requires a rider to be able to implement both skills and tactics while going full gas. This means we need some highly specific training with lots of time spent focused in the high intensity range.
The victorious ride of Wout Van Aert, and all the other medal winners, at the World cyclocross championships in Zolder at the weekend were overshadowed by the finding of a motor in one of the bikes, and so there can only be one HOT subject for the 'Lee Lowdown'. Femke Van der Driessche's name will go down in the history books for all the wrong reasons.
