Sunny King Criterium Kicks Off NCC Calendar This Weekend

Anniston, AL – April 2, 2014 – Charming Anniston, Alabama, will play host to the long-running Sunny King Criterium this Saturday, April 5, launching the 2014 USA Cycling National Criterium Calendar (NCC).
Races begin Saturday morning at 10:00 and continue throughout the day, culminating with the Pro Women and Pro Men competitions beginning at 6:20p and 7:30p, respectively. Carlos Alzate (UnitedHealthcare) and Coryn Rivera (Marian University) were crowned the Sunny King Criterium Pro Men and Pro Women champions, respectively, in 2013.
Domestic Elite Women’s Teams slated to appear on the start line include: Cloud Racing, Colavita Fine Cooking, Finish Strong, Mellow Mushroom, Pain Pathways, Pepper Palace, Pioneer Mortgage, Team Novo Nordisk and UnitedHealthcare. Continental Pro Men’s teams committed for the Sunny King Criterium include: Astellas, Champion System-Stan’s No Tubes, Hincapie Development, Incycle-Predator, Jamis-Hagens Berman, Team Novo Nordisk and UnitedHealthcare.
“Community pride has reigned supreme in Anniston for over a decade,” said Race Director Cullinane of Start Smart Cycling. “Fans will be ecstatic and cheering like crazy for racers on the course and on the Eastman podium.”

The historic Downtown Anniston under-a-mile crit course will be lined with thousands of spectators from the surrounding Noble Street Festival featuring a restaurant sampling tradition, a kids’ activity zone, a music café, vendors and more.
Weekend racing will culminate with the Foothills Road Race in nearby Piedmont on Sunday. Also taking place on Sunday is the 22nd Annual Cheaha Challenge Gran Fondo presented by Wells Fargo Advisors. Starting and finishing in the quaint college town of Jacksonville, nearly 1,000 cyclists will claim bragging rights in climbing over Alabama’s highest mountain.
