– Special Travel Feature by Peter Thomson of Thomson Bike Tours –
What is the Venture Series?
The Venture Series are limited support tours geared toward avid riders that want a ‘no frills’ European cycling trip. With modest accommodations and support (1 support van and 1 ride leader per trip), the Venture Series offers the same spectacular Thomson Bike Tour routes at a fraction of the cost. You’ll have everything you need and nothing more to conquer Europe’s most legendary mountain passes.
The first edition of the Venture series will take place this summer. We’ll be taking a pack of tenacious cyclists on the inaugural Venture Series tour through the Pyrenees for 8 days in June. The trip ascends over 55,000ft of elevation as it traces each of the epic Pyrenees mountain stages of the 2012 Tour de France. This trip is the maiden voyage of an exciting new concept. We look forward to offering an entire Venture Series program in 2013. This is a fresh take on European cycling tours and we are confident it will resonate with competitive cyclists all over the world.
Who should sign up for the Venture Series?
Designed for the experienced cyclist, the trip charts an aggressive route across the Pyrenees and offers no more than fundamental support. With 1 skilled ride leader and 1 support van, riders will experience the thrill and grandeur of the world’s most celebrated race route, all for an unbeatable price. The trip is geared for cyclists that want logistic support as they traverse the Pyrenees, but also appreciate a higher degree of independence in exchange for a reduction in cost. With 16 mountain passes, 55,000ft of elevation, and over 540 miles, riders must be trained for a challenging tour.
The Pyrenees Venture days will cover all of the 2012 Tour de France Pyrenees Mountain Stages!
Pyrenees Venture DAY 2 & 3: 2012 Tour De France Stage 16
You might remember Alberto Contador and Andy Schleck finishing side-by-side on the misty slopes of this legendary Col de Tourmalet at the 2011 Tour de France. Stage 16, with the mythical Col Tourmalet, Col d’Aubisque, Col d’Aspin, and Col du Peyresourde, has already been deemed the most challenging day of the 2012 Tour de France route. Set your expectations high- Thomson Bike Tours will lead you out on this thrilling adventure, but it’s up to you to get to the top!
Pyrenees Venture DAY 4: Tour de France Stage 17
Stage 17 of the Tour de France brings the third and final summit finish atop Col du Peyragudes. Riders that accept the Pyrenees Venture challenge will relive fond memories of their own adventure while watching the thrilling Tour coverage in July. The steep Col de Mente, at 9% grade, will start the day off with a bang.
Pyrenees Venture DAY 7: Tour de France Stage 14
On the final day of the Venture Series, we will conquer the first Pyrenean stage of the 2012 Tour de France. Celebrations will be in order as you defeat the perpendicular Col du Peguere, with it’s 14% pitches. The climactic Venture will wrap with a well-earned feast in the town of Foix.

What our riders have to say…
Here are just a few comments from riders who participated in Thomson Bike Tours:
“The most impressive organized trip I have ever been on. Every staff takes care of you to the upmost and encourages you to continue and do well. The behind the scenes effort that the team did before hand is evident in a smoothly run trip that was totally epic! Congratulations Peter for providing a great holiday.”
• Gary LaRose – CA
“It was everything I was looking for. Epic climbs, fast descents and a great bunch of people. The team were friendly, professional and competitive at the same time! I have no doubt I will be back to do it again. 10 out of 10 to Thomson and the team. The trip exceeded my expectations and I recommend this to everyone and anyone who loves cycling.”
• Michael Young – Australia
“This would be the best organized trip I have done and I could not fault any aspect of it. The staff, equipment, organization and riding were exceptional. The guys at Thomson managed to give you the feeling you are part of a global cycling event and experience some of the pain and exhilaration the pro riders experience. I liked the fact that it was a trip aimed at riding – there was certainly a lot of this. I will be back and will certainly recommend them to my friends. Well done guys on making this a memorable trip!”
• Greg O’Shea – Australia
