Sammy’s/Dreyer St. Charles Criterium
2013PSCSStCharles14Intelligentsia Cup Prairie State Cycling Series
“Sammy’s/Dreyer St. Charles Criterium” (Day 7 of 7)
Sunday, July 21, 2013

The finale of the 7-day inaugural Intelligentsia Cup Prairie State Cycling Series was packed with great racing and changes in jersey ownership before an appreciative crowd at the Sammy’s Bike Shop/Dreyer St. Charles Criterium. Sammy’s Bike Shop, adjacent to the finish line and serving espresso and hand-rolled fresh sushi beneath their ceiling-mounted carbon wheels, was the perfect host for the fourth of four USA Cycling National Criterium (NCC) dates on the Series.

Theresa Cliff-Ryan (Fearless Femme-Pure Energy Cycling) came to the line just nine points behind Jeanie Kuhajek (VanderKitten) in the Intelligentsia Cup Overall omnium competition so while the women’s 60 minutes of racing appeared mellow at moments, undoubtedly it was chock full of silent strategy. Cliff-Ryan herself spent some time up front early on but it came down once again to the raw power of a sprint.

With two to go, Pepper Palace moved up front but out of the final turn rocketed NCC leader Erica Allar (Care4Cycling-Solomon Corp) on the inside for the win. Cliff Ryan (Fearless Femme) put in a hard day’s work for second, besting Christy Keely (Pepper Palace).

A tie-breaker awarded the Overall yellow championship jersey to Cliff-Ryan over Kuhajek (VanderKitten). Jennifer Perricone (ISCorp-Intelligentsia) rounded out the Overall podium. The top 5 nods for the four NCC races go to Theresa Cliff-Ryan, Erica Allar, Christy Keely, Jessica Prinner (Care4Cycling-Solomon Corp) and Laura Van Gilder (Mellow Mushroom).

After the wild ride experienced during the first three NCC dates of the Series, what would happen on day four would remain shrouded in mystery until the final meters. By a third of the way into the 90-minute contest, a break of three – Carlos Alzate Escobar (UnitedHealthcare), David Guttenplan (AG Bicycles/Guttenplan Coaching) and Jeanmichel Lachance (Predator-Carbon Repair) held strong for an impressive stint with a gap approaching 30 seconds.

The trio was absorbed with 30 remaining, and a new break of four soon appeared. Jonathan Jacob ((Bissel-ABG-Giant), madman Alexander Ray (ISCorp-Intelligentsia), NCC leader Hilton Clarke (UnitedHealthcare) and Ricardo Escuela (Predator-Carbon Repair), the catalyst for many a jaw drop after his golden victory over UHC Friday night in Elmhurst, racked up a 29-second gap with 11 laps to go…then 41 seconds to the field; 17 to the chasers.

A chase quad was in hot pursuit – Chad Hartley (ShareCare-Wheel & Sprocket), Thomas Brown (Team SmartStop-Mountain Khakis), Karl Menzies (UnitedHealthcare) and Josh Carter (Predator-Carbon Repair). Soon the chase group would be the Crazy 8, with UnitedHealthcare’s Brad White and Luke Keough, Shane Kline (SmartStop-Mountain Khakis) and Jordan Mathes (ShareCare-Wheel & Sprocket) hitching their wagon to the original four. Carter and Mathes popping with four remaining, the chase party dropped to a half dozen.

Bissel’s Jacob folded from the break with three to go as Alzate Escobar picked up a sweet $200 field prime. Much to their chagrin, the break was caught by the chase group with two laps remaining. Burying themselves into the final lap, the leaders were 41 seconds up the road as Brad White (UnitedHealthcare) attacked, prompting another all-out pull-em-by-the-hair drag race. UnitedHealthcare returned to the podium but not without some company. UHC’s white grabbed the night’s win with powerhorse Escuela (Predator-Carbon Repair) taking second. Keough stood third on the podium while UHC teammate Escobar stole the field sprint.

Hartley’s (ShareCare-Wheel & Sprocket) seventh place finish in St. Charles earned him enough points to put him in the Overall yellow Championship jersey, two and seven points over Brandon Feehery (Astellas Oncology) and Guttenplan (AG Bicycles), respectively. Top five points earners after the 4 NCC races of the Series: Keough, Menzies, Escobar, Clarke and Escuela.

It’s been a phenomenal seven days of memories made with racers, fans, volunteers, sponsors, local venue partners and the best podium girl ever. We’ll hit you back at the 2014 Intelligentsia Cup Prairie State Cycling Series!
