The Giro d’Italia Gran Fondo

On 14 September, Vienna’s impressive calendar of international events will be enriched by a major new sports event for public participation: the inaugural Giro d’Italia Gran Fondo. The event brings the romance and mystique of the Giro d’Italia to Austria, and, for one weekend only, paints the celebrated the City of Music pink.

The Giro d’Italia Gran Fondo is an international event series designed to make the Giro d’Italia experience accessible to recreational cyclists, and to disseminate its values and history worldwide. In 2013, Giro d’Italia Gran Fondo events were held in Jerusalem, New York, Beverley Hills and Miami. The Vienna edition will be the first held in Europe, and represents an important milestone in the development of a circuit fast becoming the biggest participatory cycling series in the world.

For the duration of the race weekend, the flavours, sounds and smells of the Italian way of life are recreated in the city. The unique race spirit, authentic Italian pasta parties, the Dolce Vita atmosphere and some of the most prestigious Italian designer brands – not forgetting the limited edition ‘Made in Italy’ cycling jersey – create a magical holiday feeling for participants and spectators.

The City of Vienna
Austria’s greatest city and a world centre of culture and cuisine, Vienna is the perfect setting for the first European Giro d’Italia Gran Fondo. The global art metropolis and the undisputed world capital of music offers participants celebrated charm and tradition, glorious squares and buildings, delightful narrow streets and parks and, of course, perfect racing conditions.

The 120 km Vienna Gran Fondo is a challenging ride intended for ambitious amateur cyclists. It starts and finishes before Austria’s largest sports venue, the historic Ernst Happel Stadium, in the heart of the Wiener Prater, in the shadow of the famous Ferris wheel.

Medio Fondo
The 60 km Mediio Fondo follows a shorter circuit and is designed for enthusiastic new cyclists. Medio Fondo entrants will also experience the enchanting heart of Vienna.
