Team Novo Nordisk makes history at the USA Pro Challenge as the first all-diabetes team to compete in a major US stage race
logonovonordisk For the first time in history, an all-diabetes team of professional cyclists will line up at the start of the USA Pro Challenge, a race known as “America’s Toughest Professional Cycling Race,” competing alongside the world’s best athletes. The USA Pro Challenge will take place from August 19th to 25th and travel through eight host cities from Aspen to Denver covering almost 600 miles.

“It’s a great honor for us to be part of the USA Pro Challenge,” said Vassili Davidenko, Corporate Vice President Cycling Operation of Team Novo Nordisk. “This race is one of the most demanding races I’ve ever known and the most competitive field that has ever competed, but our team is ready.”

What makes things so difficult for the riders is the altitude. Starting in Aspen at 7,890 feet above sea level, the athletes will take a heart-pounding journey through the Colorado Rockies for seven consecutive days reaching higher altitudes than they’ve ever had to endure. Featuring teams hailing from eight countries, including Britain’s Sky Procycling, the top ranked team in the world home to 2013 Tour de France champion Chris Froome and 2012 winner Bradley Wiggins, the USA Pro Challenge is one of the largest cycling events in the U.S. attracting more than 1 million spectators in 2012.

“The interest from teams continues to grow year after year, making the selection of these 16 even more difficult, but we looked at the stats and listened to the fans, and have put together a field that is going to keep things interesting down to the last minute of racing in Denver,” says Shawn Hunter, CEO of the USA Pro Challenge. “After featuring an impressive lineup of teams and riders for the first two editions of the USA Pro Challenge, the 2013 race will host the most competitive field yet.”

“We are fortunate to have such a large platform in the USA Pro Challenge to spread our message of hope and inspiration. We have high hopes for the team, and look forward to competing against some of the best riders in the world”, says Team Novo Nordisk Co-founder and CEO, Phil Southerland. “This is going to be one of the most important races for us in the entire year. The riders are highly motivated to show fans what they’re capable of.”

In addition to Team Novo Nordisk (USA), the start list includes the UCI ProTeams BMC Racing Team (USA), Cannondale Pro Cycling (ITA), RadioShack Leopard Trek (LUX), Sky Procycling (GBR), Argos-Shimano (NED), Garmin-Sharp (USA), Saxo-Tinkoff (DEN), the UCI Professional Continental Teams Champion System Pro Cycling Team (CHN), UnitedHealthcare (USA), Colombia (COL) as well as the UCI Continental Teams Bissell Pro Cycling (USA), Bontrager Cycling (USA), Optum Presented by Kelly Benefit Strategies (USA), Jelly Belly p/b Kenda (USA) and Jamis-Hagens Berman p/b Sutter Home (USA).
