SRS Cycling Leaderboard Takes Shape in Huntsville
Logo_SRS With the second big race weekend of the year just concluding in Huntsville, Alabama, the overall leaderboard for the 2014 Southeast Regional Series presented by Stan’s NoTubes (SRS) is taking shape. Top teams from Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee brought full squads to Rocket City to race in nearly perfect weather conditions June 14-15. This was the first year that SRS has been held in Huntsville for the inaugural Jerry Damson Honda/Acura Criterium and the Ronde van Grant Road Race presented by New Belgium Beer.

SRS not only attracts the top riders and teams from across the Southeast, but also showcases the classic terrain in the region. The challenging 1.4-mile climb on Gunter Mountain, known as ‘Grunt’ Mountain by local riders, was used as the finish for Sunday’s Ronde van Grant Road Race presented by New Belgium Beer. Hilly terrain across Grant Mountain and a scenic setting along the Paint Rock River in Grant, Ala. were part of the 19-mile loop used for 9 categorized road races. The Men’s Pro 1/ 2 road race was won by Winston David (Greenville, S.C.) of CRCA/Lupus Racing Team. The road race for the Pro 1/2/3 women was won by Susan Jones-Morgan (Simpsonville, S.C.) racing for Team Zoom.

The day before on June 14, the campus of the University of Alabama-Huntsville was used for 11 individual races in the Jerry Damson Honda/Acura Criterium. The Men’s Pro 1/ 2 race was won by Matt Moosa (Charlotte, N.C.) of Stan’s NoTubes presented by Proferrin and the Women’s Pro 1/2/3 race was won by Jennifer Schuble (Homewood, Ala.) of East Point Track Club.

Ben Renkema (Greenville, S.C.) of Stan’s NoTubes powered by Proferrin retained the Hincapie Overall Leaders jersey in the Men’s Pro 1/2 category with a Top 10 finish in the Ronde van Grant Road Race. With a second place finish in the Ronde van Grant Road Race and a third in the Jerry Damson Honda/Acura Criterium, Andy Scarano (Athens, Ga.) of Team United HealthCare/The 706 Project is now second overall in the SRS leader points. David of CRCA/Lupus Racing Team stands in third overall, placing second in the criterium after winning the road race in Huntsville.

Also in the Men’s Pro 1/ 2 race category, Dan Zmolik (New York, N.Y.), retained the Stan’s NoTubes King of the Mountain jersey as the best climber in the series. David of CRCA/Lupus Racing Team moved into the PEZ Cycling News Sprint lead.

In the Women’s Pro 1/2/3 category, Amy Floyd (Mobile, Ala.) of ST3 rocketed into the Hincapie Overall Leaders jersey. Stephanie Cucaz (Lawrenceville, Ga.) of Team PCP Racing, moved to second place. There is a tie for third place –Jones-Morgan of Team Zoom, who won Sunday’s road race, and Schuble of East Point Track Club, Saturday’s criterium winner.

Floyd is now the top sprinter for the Pro 1/2/3 women, receiving the PEZ Cycling News Sprint jersey. Jones-Morgan of Team Zoom moved into the Stan’s NoTubes Queen of the Mountain jersey as the top climber for the pro women.

These special award jerseys will continue to be awarded throughout the series for best sprinters, climbers and overall winners (male and female).
