RusVelo’s Mr Speed comes to support his road colleagues
logokatusha14 One of the fastest cycling sprinters on Earth, double World Championships medalist and the European sprint champion visited Italy to support the riders of RusVelo road squads and to have a closer look at international road racing in general. He began with TTT stage 1B of Settimana Internazionale di Coppi e Bartali, then followed the action of Trofeo Alfredo Binda, the second women’s UCI World Cup.

That is how Denis Dmitriev summed up his impressions:
“It was a very interesting experience, to see what is in common between road and track cycling and what sets them apart. It might seem strange, but being a trackie, I’ve never actually been on site of a big international road event. It looked great from every point of view: logistics, organization in general and technical perfectness. It was a pleasure to support my national track teammate Artur Ershov who demonstrated his expert skills in the narrow streets. 13 km-long TTT must feel next to nothing for a diehard roadie, just like a team sprint for us. The fact that I turned out a lucky charm for the team made the day even more positive, no matter how murky the skies were. As to the women’s World Cup, I wish I had more information during the race – the girls pass you once a lap on the climb, and then you don’t see them again for more than 20 minutes; to hear the speaker you were supposed to be near the finish. Choosing between standing on the roadside or watching it all on TV, I’d definitely go for the latter one, for me it’s more of a television event.

Denis also shared his plans for the coming months: “In about two weeks’ time I’m flying to Japan to try my legs in the Japanese professional keirin circuit. It naturally feels like breaking a new ground, and I really like to expand my horizons. Still, before getting to the start I’ll study their specific type of keirin in the academy for two weeks and I’ll have to pass a couple of exams after that, even a written one. I’ve also got an agreement with the organizers that I’ll have a break in the schedule to come back to Moscow for a couple of days to take part in the Memorial of Alexander Lesnikov.”
