His ID says he’s nineteen years old, fresh off his birthday on October 19th, but his eyes portray much more maturity and experience beyond his years. His name is Matej Mohoric, and he was born in Kranj, Slovenia, in 1994. Today he paid his first visit to the Sidi Sport headquarters in Maser (Treviso). He has already worn two World Champion jerseys, one in the juniors category captured in Valkenburg in 2012, and one as an under23, which he won this year in Florence while wearing his Sidi Wire shoes. It was an immediate record for Mohoric, who is the only rider who has ever managed to achieve this magical World Championship double. The under23 World Championship jersey is an important one; however he won’t be able to show it off too much, since he’ll be wearing the even more important Team Cannondale jersey. Yes, because in spite of his young age Matej Mohoric has already been called on to make the big jump to the pros, where he will be debuting in the peloton starting in 2014.
“These have been two incredible seasons,” says Matej Mohoric. “To make the move to the professionals and to be able to do so on such an important team, with high caliber champions like Peter Sagan and Ivan Basso, is really quite remarkable. For me this is a dream come true; I’ve always wanted to be a rider, I was committed to it and I worked hard for it and now I’ve got this great opportunity to go for it. The two world victories were a nice accomplishment, yet they weren’t an arrival point but just a stop on the road to becoming a pro and setting my sights even further. I know it’s not going to be easy; the first year everything will be new and I will really have a lot to learn. This is the first year I’ve had the chance to use Sidi shoes; I felt great wearing the Wire models right away and I’m happy because I know that even on Team Cannondale, where all the riders use these shoes, I can count on Sidi’s support.”
“Regardless of his young age, to me Matej Mohoric seems like a very bright and competent kid; you don’t win two World Championships like he did just by chance,” explains Dino Signori, owner and founder of Sidi Sport. “Over the years I’ve seen lots of riders and young talents come through here; some of them went on to become champions and others kind of lost their way, but in Matej’s eyes I see determination, seriousness and a desire to commit himself to succeed. I’m sure that on Roberto Amadio’s team, with which we’ve been collaborating for years with excellent results, he will find the right atmosphere and drive to further mature and become a great rider.”
