Lotto Belisol: Adam Hansen aims for a stage win in Giro
logolottobelisol14 Tomorrow Adam Hansen stands at the start of the Giro for the sixth time. It will be his eighth Grand Tour in a row. In the Tour of Turkey the Australian rider made a good impression with a seventh and ninth place in two mountain stages, which led him to the ninth place in GC. That’s also the place he finished on in the Tour Down Under at the beginning of the season. Then he also won the KOM jersey. In Tirreno-Adriatico the Aussie showed himself in the stage over the Muro di Guardiagrele, which yielded him the fourth place. Last year Hansen won the seventh Giro stage. He ended an early breakaway with a twenty kilometers long solo to Pescara. This year Adam will look for another stage victory.

It feels like the first race of the season
Adam Hansen: “I do not really think about the fact that this is my eighth Grand Tour in a row. It doesn’t feel like that either. I just have a very good programme and in the run-up to the Giro I had periods of races and trainings and periods of rest and recovery. It feels like it’s the first race of my season and I’m proud to take part in this race. I had a good preparation. I rode very strongly in the Tour of Turkey last week, especially in the mountain top finishes. My performances there made me happy. It shows I’m on the right track for the next weeks.”

Hunger to race
“I don’t need much racing kilometers going into a Grand Tour, lots of my preparation I do via training. I like to work in blocks – race, rest, train – and not use races as preparation. I want to go to a race and perform. Because I spend a lot of time training at home in between the different races, spread over the season, I always have the hunger to race. Every time I go to a race I want to be there.”

I want to win a stage
“I want to win a stage this Giro. I have the form for it and I’m even better than last year. I hope I get in a breakaway that makes it to the finish. Next to that I’ll have my part in the teamwork, supporting Maxime Monfort in his search for a top ten. We have to start with riding a good team time trial on Friday. It’s great the Giro starts in Northern-Ireland. It’s nice to have a change of scenery and it’s good for the cycling fans in those countries, other than where the Grand Tours traditionally take place. The Giro is the most exciting Grand Tour according to me, also to watch. It’s a dynamic race.”
