Filippo Pozzato, who was recovering position from the middle of the bunch, was stopped by the riders involved in the crash and so he had to say goodbye to his aims in a stage that was suitable for him.
“I knew that the last bend could have been very dangerous, especially because it was wet,” Pozzato (photo Bettini, with sport director Maini) explained.” That’s why I had decided to approach it carefully, trying to recover positions in the rising final straight to the arrival. Then the crash in the early positions of the group neutralized all my plans and so I missed a very good chance. I think I had performed a good race, being in the early positions of the group on Montescaglioso GPM and on the climb to Matera, also thanks to the support by the team mates. Now, I’ll try to do my best for the team, waiting for the next suitable chance for me.”
Amazing work by Niemiec, who gave a perfect support to Pozzato and Scarponi in the stage climbs: “I’m feeling all right and so I had no problem in giving my help to my captains,” the Polish athlete said. “The early stage of the Giro demonstrated that every day must be approached with the top attention, so I try to be ready in the key moments of the race.”
