Great finale: Verschoor and Peron finish 6th and 8th in the Olympic city Rio
Team Novo Nordisk has completed its performance with a great finale at the Tour do Rio. In the final stage of the most important stage race in Brazil, both Martijn Verschoor and Andrea Peron were able to get in the top ten, finishing 6th and 8th respectively in the 182km (113.3m) stage. This meant that Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes professional cycling team, was able to celebrate an outstanding achievement for the 4th time in a row. It was a breakaway group again that sprinted for the stage win – the 28-year-old Brazilian Gregolry Panizo won after 3:42:52 hours. Oscar Sevilla, who was once second in the Vuelta a Espana, won the Tour do Rio overall.

“A great race from beginning to end, the team has grown rapidly in the months past,” said Vassili Davidenko, Corporate Vice President Cycling Operation of Team Novo Nordisk. “The team as whole and every single rider has performed outstandingly in Brazil.”

The peloton almost caught the breakaway group at the end of the stage, but the group could take advantage of the technical course through the second largest city of Brazil and eventually made it to the finish line. “This finale was very sketchy; with about 400 meters to go, I had to break hard and basically restarted at 0 km/h!” said the 24-year-old Peron who finished 8th in today’s stage. It was his 3rd top-ten result in the race. Martijn Verschoor was 7th at the beginning of the stage race, Peron was 7th in Três Rios and 6th in Rio das Ostras. “The guys did again a very good job working in the chase and in preparation for the sprint,” Verschoor said after the stage. “Chris Williams, Aaron Perry and Fabio Calabria had a very hard stage again working for the sprint.”

For the next races Team Novo Nordisk returns to Asia after the great achievements in the US Pro Challenge and the Tour do Rio. The Team will race for the first time in the most heavily populated country on earth as the Tour of China begins on September 14th.
