Giro, warm-up ahead of great mountains
bettiniphoto_0145743_1_full After yesterday’s emotions, Team Colombia had a quiet day ahead of the high-mountain tryptich set to decide the 96th Giro d’Italia. Claudio Corti’s athletes looked to save energies in the 214 km 17th stage from Caravaggio to Vicenza, where Giovanni Visconti (Movistar) took his second win in this race. The Italian rider broke away on the day’s only categorized climbs, and ended up preceding the group led by Ramunas Navardauskas (Garmin) and Luka Megzec (Argos) by 19 seconds. Vincenzo Nibali confidently retained the pink jersey for the 11th day in a row, while Darwin Atapuma held on his 20th GC position, despite losing some seconds in the finale, characterized by a narrow descent that broke the pack.

Right after the start, 4 riders went on the attack: Miguel Angel Rubiano Chavez (Androni-Venezuela), Maxim Belkov (Katusha), Gert Dockx (Lotto-Belisol) and Luke Durbridge (Orica-GreenEDGE). The quartet reached a 5-minute maximum advantage, with the sprinters’ teams holding the reins behind. On the Crosara climb, Danilo Di Luca (Vini Fantini-Selle Italia) accelerated, followed by Giovanni Visconti (Movistar), while Rubiano was insisting solo in his action at the front. Visconti bridged and dropped the Colombian, and after winning the KOM he sailed solo to the finish.

“We had a slight loss of concentration today – Sports Director Oscar Pellicioli explained – after a demanding stage like yesterday’s and looking forward to the big mountains: we wanted a quiet day today, and the strong acceleration at the foot of the climb kind of surprised us. From tomorrow on it will be all about mountains until Brescia – if the weather doesn’t upset it all – so we will see what happens.”

On Thursday May 23th, the anticipated 20,6 km uphill time trial from Mori to Polsa will take place, on a route the Escarabajos recced during their winter training camp in Trentino.
