Daniela Schorn sprints to 2nd place at the Tour of California
1485_AToC13_Peter_Sagan_1st_StaRosa_PhSpt[1] In the mass sprint on Sunday in Santa Rosa, Daniel Schorn sprinted into second place. The 24-year-old Austrian from Team NetApp-Endura was only outpaced by Peter Sagan (CAN). The final stage in this year’s Tour of California produced no changes in the overall rankings. Tejay van Garderen (BMC) scored his first tour victory. Leopold Koenig, winner of yesterday’s queen stage, was the best-placed rider for Team NetApp-Endura in eleventh place.

The eighth stage of the Tour of California started on Sunday morning in San Francisco, first taking the peloton across the Golden Gate Bridge. The breakaway group managed to draw away from the field, but did not build up much of a lead. As a result of the rather undemanding stage profile, the sprinters were hoping for a win. The major teams organized the chase and caught the last breakaway rider 10 kilometers before the finish in Santa Rosa. On the extremely fast finish lap, Daniel Schorn was kept in a very good position by team-mate Zak Dempster. The Austrian managed to defend his second place ahead of Tyler Farrar (GRS) with a powerful surge.

“The last stage of the tour of California was made for the sprinters. Both Daniel and Zak wanted to sprint so we decided to let them race for themselves. In the end Zak ended up leading out the sprint for Daniel and brought him into a very good position for the final 200 meters. We are very happy with second place especially with such a good field of sprinters. Daniel almost gave us another victory and this result will give him confidence for the next races”, explained Alex Sans Vega after the race.

“Shortly before a small climb with 500 meters to go, I accelerated and immediately felt that I would have a good sprint. Finally, i had a good sensation in a sprint. When Sagan came past, I tried to stay with him, but he accelerated again and I couldn’t come by him. Still, I am very happy with second place. A great result for me and the team”, said Daniel Schorn after the race.

“It was a very good week for us, especially the last two days. The team is on the right track for further successes this season”, Alex Sans Vega concluded.

With a stage victory, a second place and three riders in the top twenty of the overall rankings, Team NetApp-Endura ensured a very good result. After a free Sunday afternoon, which the team will be spending in San Francisco, the riders are expected on Monday at the headquarters of NetApp, their principal sponsor, in Silicon Valley.
