This summer the spotlight has been turned on the unsung stars of cycling – the people who give up their time and energy to help and inspire others to get the most out of their riding. From almost a hundred nominations received, 24 dedicated individuals were shortlisted, each playing a pivotal role in their community.
From using cycling to build stronger communities, to getting more women and disabled people on bikes, our Cycling Heroes represent just a snapshot of the incredible work going on. Over twelve thousand public votes were cast, the results have been counted, and the regional heroes are:
Local Cycling Hero for the North West region: Sandra Green
Local Cycling Hero for the Yorkshire & North East region: Naz Ali
Local Cycling Hero for the Scotland region: John McCracken
Local Cycling Hero for the Midlands region: Maryam Amatullah
Local Cycling Hero for the Central / East region: Roy Pink
Local Cycling Hero for the London region: Spencer Harradine
Local Cycling Hero for the South West / South / Wales region: John Wheat
Local Cycling Hero for the South East region: Tom Morton
Double World Champion Becky James pays tribute to our winners:
‘Volunteers are essential to cycling in this country, without them we wouldn’t have a sport and we certainly wouldn’t have Olympic and World Champions. I know how much volunteers have helped my career, so it’s great to see so many people being recognised for giving up their time for cycling.’
The winners are being invited to a VIP experience at the World Track Championships in Manchester. If you’ve been inspired to get on your bike, find out what cycling opportunities are on your doorstep at goskyride.com.
