British Cycling Hails Record-Breaking Crowds at National Championships
BritishCycling(CMYK) Record-breaking crowds at this weekend’s National Road Race Championships have been hailed by British Cycling today, after 30,000 people lined the streets to watch Mark Cavendish and Lizzie Armistead ride to glory on Sunday.

British Cycling’s website saw its most successful day in history with double the number of visits that the National Championships saw in 2012. Web traffic to on Sunday was higher than it was even during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. British Cycling’s twitter feed also reached over 40,000 followers.

Commenting on the news, British Cycling’s Director of Cyclesport and Membership, Jonny Clay, said:

“This year’s National Road Race Championships was the best attended yet and demonstrates the public appetite that we are seeing in this country for watching live road cycling. The road race in Glasgow on Sunday drew Tour de France style crowds and the atmosphere was fantastic.

“This year was a break from the norm in that the road race went through a major city and the rewards that Glasgow will have reaped from hosting the event are obvious. I want to thank Scottish Cycling, Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Life, Event Scotland and of course the amazing riders.

“In particular, I want to thank the fans in Glasgow who turned out in huge numbers and made the event the success it was.

“The fact that our website traffic broke records as well for the number of visits shows that thousands of people all over Britain are fans of cycling and want to catch up on all of the action. We are now excited to build on this event next year.”

Highlights of the National Road Race Championships will be shown tonight on ITV4 and ITV4 HD at 7pm.
