TOP STORY: US Multi-Champion Banned
62 year old David LeDuc has been given a two year ban by the US Anti Doping Agency after testing positive for EPO, steroids and amphetamines. The ex-World’s master’s champion was tested at the US 2013 nation championships. A statement from USADA stated: “Anabolic Androgenic Steroids, rhEPO, and amphetamines are all prohibited under the USADA Protocol for Olympic and Paralympics Movement Testing and the UCI Anti-Doping Rules, both of which have adopted the World Anti-Doping Code (“Code”) and the World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List.” LeDuc has accepted his ban which began on December the 24th 2014 and all results from September the 6th onwards have been annulled.
Apparently LeDuc said: “I told them don’t even waste your time testing the ‘B’ sample, I’m guilty. They said, ‘Well, since you’re not going to contest it, we’ll give you the minimum penalty of two years.’” As is usual in the situation, the rider stated that he had not been EPO and testosterone for long, adding that “The irony is that it didn’t help, because this year I had the worst results of my life.” LeDuc is not a unique case as a Californian rider also failed a drugs test at the same race and in 2010 Pete Cannell lost three masters national championships and was banned for two years.
In an article by Newsobserver.com; the use of testosterone by ‘older’ men is fairly wide spread in the US because anti-aging clinics prescribe it to men who complain of ‘symptoms’ such as fatigue and a lowered sex drive, even if the patients’ blood count is only low for testosterone. A study, published in the medical journal JAMA of nearly 11 million men, found that the number who had been prescribed testosterone had tripled since 2001 and many showed no evidence of real deficiency.
In LeDuc’s case he said his testosterone level was unusually low, but after he started to use it his levels were not above the normal range. He also believed that he would only fail a drugs test if his levels were high, not that he had a non-natural testosterone in his body.
So what makes a man in his 60’s take EPO, testosterone and amphetamines? It can’t be the prize money as that is small, the only thing it can be must is that they need to stay on top or even just to be competitive as they were earlier in their careers, or in some cases better than they were when they were young. One bright point is that the CCA board will be joining USA Cycling and USADA in paying for more tests to catch riders in all age groups.
BPost Bank Trofee – GP Sven Nys 2014
World champion Sven Nys (Crelan-AA Drink) showed off his new kit and Trek bike in his own race on New Year’s Day on Wednesday by winning and taking his 12th win out of 15 events. As he did at the weekend, Nys took the front from the beginning and only Rob Peeters (Vastgoedservive-Golden Palace) was able to get with him, although he was dropped during the third lap. From then on Nys put time into everyone to cross the line with his bike held in the air, this time it was a Trek and not a Colnago. Behind him Peeters struggled to finish 4th as Zdenek Stybar (Omega Pharma – Quick-Step) and Niels Albert (BKCP-Powerplus) passed him. Nys has lengthened his overall lead in the BPost Trofee to 2:57 over Albert and Thijs van Amerongen (AA Drink-Leontien.nl) moved into 3rd at 6:38 as Klaas Vantornout (Sunweb-Napoleon) dropped to 7th due to illness and mechanical problems.

World champion Marianne Vos (Rabobank Liv/Giant) animated the woman’s race, after a fast start she was joined by Katie Compton (Trek) and the two fought the win out between them with British champion Nikki Harris (Telenet-Fidea) riding a solo race for third. Vos and Compton were evenly matched until the last lap when Vos had a front puncture and rode back to the pits for a bike change. She lost a lot of time, but still finished second and although this move is against the rules, but her place stood. Helen Wyman (Kona) was fourth.

Dani Moreno injured in Training Crash
Katusha’s Daniel Moreno was hit by a van while training on his time trial bike in Argentina. He went to the hospital, luckily there were no broken bones, but his bike was completely destroyed. Under medical recommendation he is to rest for two days before recommencing training as he has received a nasty blow to the hip. He is in Argentina training for the Tour de San Luis, starting on the 20th and running to the 26th of January 2014.

Omega Pharma – Quick Step has officially announced the squad that will take part in the Tour de San Luis, the brief Argentine stage race that will take place from January 20th to the 26th of 2014.
For team OPQS this will be the third time they’ve participated in a race that has always brought great satisfaction to the team lead by Patrick Lefevere.
“This is a perfect race to start the season,” explains Sports Director Davide Bramati. “There is only a four hour time difference, so it won’t create any particular problems and it will allow us to get to Argentina just a few days before the race, on January 16th. The race will include a time trial, three arrivals suited to sprinters and three climbing arrivals, one more than last year.“
OPQS will be lining up at the starting grid with high caliber athletes like Mark Cavendish, who just last year achieved his first success wearing the OPQS jersey right here, and Tom Boonen, who already won at the Tour de San Luis in his golden year, 2012, and who is looking forward to returning to racing after a long stop period. Next to them we’ll have the experience of Alessandro Petacchi, the solidness of Stijn Vandenbergh, and the youth and determination of Guillaume Van Keirsbulck and Gianluca Brambilla.
“We can’t deny we have a good team at the starting line,” continues Bramati. “Cav, Tom, and Peta together have garnered more than 400 victories in the years of their careers, a truly incredible number that speaks volumes about the potential of the squad. Cav and Tom have also won in this race and they are familiar with its dynamics. In the stage for sprinters we will be called on to take the initiative. During our next retreat (January 6-14, 2014) we’re going to work more specifically with this group so we will be ready to take advantage of any chance that presents itself.”

Belkin to Change Co-Sponsors for Certain Races
In an interview with Wielerflits, the Belkin team’s commercial manager has said that if any sponsors were interested in appearing on the team jersey on a one race basis, they would be open to any offers. “It will be possible to sponsor the team for one race only, or for a period of time. For example, if an Australian company wants to advertise during Tour Down Under only, this is possible.” There is a UCI rule governing the change of clothing during the year, but Belkin seem to think this isn’t a problem, saying: “We discussed this with the UCI,” Van de Camp stated. “It’s allowed to change logos throughout the season. We are now talking with several parties who are interested for the races in the USA, or the Tour de France for example. Belkin will remain on the jersey but another major sponsor will be added. The design stays the same; we’ll only add some logos. Our jersey was the best recognizable one in the peloton last year. Belkin also requested not to change it. This year we’ll keep it like this. For 2015 we’ll change the design.”

Voeckler Leads Europcar at Tour Down Under
Thomas Voeckler will be the top man for Europcar in Australia’s Santos Tour Down Under starting on Sunday the 19th in Adelaide and finishing in Adelaide on Sunday the 26th of January after six stages. Race director, Mike Turtur commented: “Thomas Voeckler is one of the greatest French cyclists of his generation so we are thrilled he is making not only his debut at the Santos Tour Down Under but also his racing debut in Australia.” He added that; “This may be Europcar’s first year as a UCI Pro Tour team but they are bringing a strong lineup to Adelaide and we can expect plenty of attacking from them.”

Press Release: Two-time overall winner Simon Gerrans will headline a seven-strong squad for ORICA-GreenEDGE at the Santos Tour Down Under in Adelaide. Gerrans will have a dynamic team and enjoy strong support from compatriots Simon Clarke, Luke Durbridge, Matt Goss, Mathew Hayman, Michael Matthews and South African Daryl Impey.
“As an Australian team, this is a very important race for us,” said Sport Director Matt White. “We always want to do well at the Tour Down Under. We have a strong team, and everyone is really motivated to bring home some good results in front of our Australian fans. We’re targeting stage wins and focused on the overall. We have a number of options to achieve these goals.”
With both Goss and Matthews amongst its starters, the Australian outfit has multiple options for the sprint stages The duo has an experienced and versatile train at their disposal should the fast finishes become a priority.
“It’s natural that people will want to know who we’re working for in the sprints,” said White “The honest answer is that we don’t know yet. We’re going to have to wait to get closer to the day to make that decision. The races in the first half of January will give us some indication, but we may not know until we see what happens out on the road during the Tour Down Under.”
Given his past success at the Santos Tour Down Under, it’s natural eyes will be on Gerrans in Adelaide. The Victorian secured the ochre leader’s jersey on count-back at the start of the team’s maiden season. When an asthma attack removed Gerrans from general classification contention in 2012, he went after stage wins and scored a big one atop Willunga on Australia Day.
“This race certainly suits Gerro’s characteristics,” said White. “He’s put a big emphasis on the race during the last two years, and he has done the same again for the upcoming season. He had an early exit to last year with a broken hip. Now he’s fresh, fit and very motivated.”
The versatile trio of Clarke, Durbridge and Impey are highly capable of providing support across a wide variety of scenarios. They will prove invaluable in laying the foundation that will allow their teammates to achieve sought-after results. Clarke is important for Gerrans in the hillier stages while Durbridge and Impey are equally at ease in the sprint train as they are taking turns on the front of the bunch.
“Clarkey is a very canny rider,” said White. “He can read races very well, and he certainly knows his way around the bunch. He can fill several roles within the team at this race, and we can count on him to fully commit to whatever his job is on any given day.”
“Durbo is also an important part of the equation,” White continued. “Because of his focus on the individual time trial at the National Championships, we know he will be in great shape in three weeks. Like Clarkey, Luke’s versatility adds huge value to our line-up.”
“Daryl has been preparing for the start of the season in the Southern Hemisphere,” said White. “He spends his off season at home in South Africa, and he’s always able to get in very good training. He’s a rider we can count on to perform well at the start of the year, and his inclusion in our team is crucial for our goals.”
Lining up for his eighth Tour Down Under, Hayman will serve as road captain for his new team. It’s the first of many times that Hayman is expected step into this role within the Australian outfit.
“Mat has been around the block a number of times at the Tour Down Under,” said White. “This is his first time working for us of course, and we’re very excited to have him onboard. His experience will be a huge big benefit to our team.”

Intxausti to Ride the Tour in 2014
According to biciciclismo Beñat Intxausti will be riding the 2014 Tour de France for the first time since 2011. Intxausti will be in the Movistar team to support team leader Alejandro Valverde. The Basque rider will start his season in Argentina at the Tour de San Luis before the Challenge Mallorca, Paris-Nice and the Vuelta a Pais Vasco with altitude training in Tenerife.

WADA to Use Hair Tests
President of WADA, Sir Craig Reedie has announced that the new fund of six million GBP from the IOC will help in the battle against dopers. He said: “This new fund from the IOC will create tremendous opportunities for advances in anti-doping and allow our scientists to look at alternative approaches to sample testing for banned substances.” He also added that hair samples may in future be collected, “We test in the main blood and urine, but now we will look at different approaches, such as can we use a lock of hair.”
Hoste Loses Appeal
Retired Belgian rider Leif Hoste has lost his appeal against the two year ban given to him because of irregularities in his Biopassport. His defence was that errors had been made in the controls which were based on blood samples taken in 2008 and 2010. The Belgian cycling federation has confirmed the ban, but reduced his fine from the possible €300,000 to €150,000. He can still take his case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Hoste retired at the end of 2012 due to back problems.

Press Release: A jam-packed January of racing is about to kick off Down Under. Our typical season opener, the Mitchelton Bay Cycling Classic, begins this evening and sets off a month of action. Below, we outline who is racing where and when and share our objectives as we head into season number three.
Mitchelton Bay Cycling Classic // January 2-5:
Shara Gillow seized the first win for the GreenEDGE family when she won the third race of the 2012 Jayco Bay Cycling Classic. The women’s squad had even more reason to celebrate the when Melissa Hoskins clinched the series overall. In 2013, Hoskins won the final day of the then three-day series en route to a repeat overall victory.
Although the men’s team missed out on a race win during their first appearance in 2012, consistent performances by former rider Allan Davis earned him overall victory in 2012. In 2013, Luke Durbridge won in Portartlington to give ORICA-GreenEDGE their first Bay Crits race win. Mitch Docker quickly delivered Bay Crits victory number two the following day in Williamstown.
It’s worth nothing that Caleb Ewan, on pre-contract with the team until he joins as a stagiaire in August, has won three out of seven days of Mitchelton Bay Cycling Classic racing over the past two years, and returns as defending overall champion with the Subaru NSWIS squad.

Movistar’s New Endura Kit
The riders of the telephone squad will be enjoying a brandnew race outfit for 2014, with the blue and green Movistar colours always present
Press Release: The riders of the Movistar Team are wearing their new Endura race outfit for 2014 as of today. Alejandro Valverde and Nairo Quintana are the ones in charge of unveiling the new jersey that the best team in the world in 2013 will feature during the upcoming season.
Endura has put a great deal of work into developing the 2014 Movistar Team clothing. Made in its facility near Edinburgh in Scotland, the company has invested thousands of hours in the development and manufacture of the new Team clothing, including the coldblack® technology to reduce heat absorption from the sun. Refinement of the chamois pads design has been achieved using the 800 CVP series, which includes the latest saddle pressure mapping technology and has allowed, where necessary, semi-custom fitting of pads to match individual riders’ bone geometry and riding position. Whilst all of the styles are constantly reviewed for further development, currently there is no area of more intense work than in the aerodynamic function of the chronosuits and overshoes that will be worn by the Movistar Team in time trials. Significant discoveries have already been made in the wind tunnel over the past few months and Endura is confident that more speed can be unleashed with the prototype developments that are already in the test schedule over the coming months.
The design of the outfit keeps the same base from previous seasons, though the corporative green from Movistar gains presence with trims in the sleeves of the jersey and the end of the culotte, as well as the inclusing of the Movistar ‘m’ on the shoulders, thus achieving a more visual, attractive result which will keep the telephone squad’s jersey as one of the most distinctive kits in the world. Whilst the team riders are clearly the winners from these efforts, supporters of the Movistar Team benefit too since all Movistar Team clothing sold in stores is exactly the same specification as that worn by the team riders. Endura and Movistar Team believe that their supporters deserve nothing less.

The Movistar Team will ride on Canyon bikes as of 2014, one of the most prestigious brands in the world offering their models to the telephone squad. The riders are already training on the German firm’s machines before their debut at the Tour Down Under (Australia) and the Tour de San Luis (Argentina), the first two stops of a long schedule for the squad managed by Eusebio Unzué.
Canyon will be bringing the Movistar Team their best materials after intense development on the R&D base of their headqaurters in Koblenz, always in permanent contact with the squad’s members to achieve the best efficiency on their bikes.
