TOP STORY: A Change of Mind at the UCI?
At the UCI’S first meeting of the year in Hoogerheide at the World cyclo-cross Championships, the Management Committee approved the regulations for the Cycling Independent Reform Commission, and took a number of measures for the development of cycling and also the composition of the UCI’s Equipment Commission.
A statement from the UCI said there would be a “new approach in favour of innovation and technology.” The revamped Equipment Commission will consist of UCI president Brian Cookson, Martijn Swinkels representing the UCI’s commissaires, Carsten Jeppesen representing race team, a representative of the World Federation of Sporting Goods Industries representing the bicycle industry, the UCI’s existing composites expert Professor Jan Anders Manson, Alex Roussel representing mechanics and Martina Schär as a representative from the “wider public.” Aerodynamics engineering specialist Dimitris Katsanis, who has long worked for British Cycling, becomes a consultant to the UCI.
This change might allow for progress in bike design which many believe had been stifled in recent years. Basically since Graeme Obree came along with his innovative ideas of position and bike design. His positions were copied by many and in the end all were banned. The Scottish rider designed aerodynamic positions without the use of wind tunnels or computers, but his first riding position was disliked by members of the UCI committee and was banned during the 1994 World track championships. He then came up with the ‘Superman’ position which many record holders copied, including Francesco Moser and Chris Boardman. This too was banned and since then the rules have been tightened up to the point of some riders having to change their natural riding style to accommodate the UCI’s strict measurements. With the addition of these specialists there might be a return to inventive bike design.

UCI World Cyclo-cross Championships 2014
Zdenek Stybar (Czech Republic) out powered Sven Nys (Belgium) in the last lap to take his third World cyclo-cross title. The Belgian team was the strongest on paper, but the race didn’t go their way. First the Frenchman Francis Mourey had a good start to lead the race through the first lap, Nys and Stybar and Lars van der Haar (Netherlands) pulled him back, but the damage had been done behind them and the four left the others behind. Nys and Stybar were the strongest and it wasn’t long until Mourey was in trouble and was dropped. Next it was Van der Haar who was in trouble, but he had crashed twice and was suffering with a pedal problem. Nys and Stybar pushed on and were sure to fight out for the Rainbow jersey, the others in the Belgium team started to get their act together as Kevin Pauwels, Klaas Vantornout and caught and passed Mourey and Van der Haar. In the last lap Nys made his decisive move and looked to have Stybar in trouble, but he crashed on a U-turn and Stybar was gone and heading for the win. Nys came in 12 seconds later and Pauwels took the bronze medal 40 seconds later.
“From the beginning I just thought ‘OK, let’s make the race hard,’ as I had nothing to lose,” Zdenek Stybar (Omega Pharma – Quick-Step) said. “I saw that we were a group of four so I just thought ‘OK I have to go, I have to give everything,’ even if I had a really hard start. I started from 4th or maybe 5th line and I had to go full gas from the start. I had to come back and it was a really big effort for me pretty fast. So I decided to go for it, I was just going to make it hard. Then we were with three, then we were down to two riders, and I was just going to fight for the podium. It’s maybe different when you are a full cyclo-cross racer and there is a little bit more pressure. I was going from full preparation from the road season to do the UCI World Championship. It almost didn’t feel like it was the world championship except for all of the fans, which they were amazing. I was just enjoying the race and decided to fight for the podium. I had done only six cyclo-cross races and thought ‘OK, this is a circuit that would suit me and I am just going to try,’ but I really didn’t expect I would be World Champion. This is my third world championship. The first one you can’t compare. It was in front of my home crowd in the Czech Republic, my first one, and until now still the peak of my career. This world championship is of course still really nice and I really appreciate the opportunity to be World Champion again.”

The men’s race:
Marianne Vos (Netherlands) repeated her win of last year to retain the women’s cyclo-cross title and take her seventh Rainbow cross jersey. She attacked on the first lap and was never seen again by the others until the podium where Eva Lechner (Italy) and Britain’s Helen Wyman joined her. Wyman looked good leading from the start line, but Vos and Lechner didn’t let her get too far and when she made a slight mistake she was dropped by Vos and Lechner. The Italian and Dutch tandem drew away with Lechner working with Vos until near the end of the first lap where Vos rode away and built up her lead for the victory. American hopeful; Katherine Compton had a bad start and a tangle with another rider left her trailing. Belgium’s Sanne Cant caught Wyman and the two were joined by Compton until Cant put in a strong effort which distanced the US rider. Into the last lap and Vos was leading Lechner by 53 seconds and Cant and Wyman by 1:09. Vos didn’t ease off and won by 1:07 from Lechner with Wyman 10 seconds back for the bronze medal. Sanne Cant finished 3 seconds down on Wyman for fourth and Britain’s Nikki Harris was fifth at 2:33.
Multi-champion, Marianne Vos said: “I don’t want to choose between one of my titles. The first one was great and in the Netherlands, the second one was here in Hoogerheide, too. It’s incredible. I can’t believe that I already won seven world titles. I didn’t think about it during the race. Every year you have to prove yourself. I just like the sport. I like the pressure at the big races, especially in your own country. Everything has to come together in one day.”

The woman’s race:
The Belgian team dominated the Under 23 race, much like the junior race; there were five Belgians in the top ten, in fact four in the first five. Wout van Aert won the Gold medal for Belgium; he made his move on the first lap and then just stayed there to the line. Holland’s Mathieu van der Poel had come into the race as the favourite, but the Belgian team had him on the ropes from the beginning. Belgium sent Toon Aerts off the front, this forced the Dutch to chase, when he was caught, Wout van Aert made his move by running as the others rode on one of the muddy sections. He soon gained a gap and then the Belgian team shut the race down. The Dutch team had a lot of bad luck and at one point Van der Poel was well out of the medals, but he fought back to get the better of Laurens Sweeck for the bronze medal.
After the finish, the new World U23 champion Wout van Aert said: “I went on the first lap and on every lap the lead grew and grew. Yesterday we had three on the podium in the junior race and today it’s two. I think we’re the best team and I’m extremely proud.”

The Under 23 race:
In the junior men’s race; Belgium dominated taking all three medals and filling the top ten with five riders. Thijs Aerts won by 10 seconds from his Belgian countrymen Yannick Peeters and Jelle Schuermans. Best of the non-Belgians was Joris Nieuwenhuis of Holland, but he was worked over by the Belgians and had no chance. A crash at the start ruined the chances of pre-race favourite; Adam Toupalik (Czech Republic) who is leading the World Cup. Aerts made his move on the last lap after Nieuwenhuis had chased an attack by Peeters down and the race was as good as over.
Junior World champion, Thijs Aerts said after the finish: “Beforehand I would not have believed it. I was stressing to make it into the Belgian selection and was glad that I survived the cut,” the winner said at the finish. It’s my first ever world championships race and I just wanted to get a good result. This win comes as quite a surprise. It’s great of course. On one climb I made the difference as I was able to keep riding until the top whereas the others were running. In the last lap I used that advantage to ride away from Yannick Peeters.”

Belgian Kenneth Vanbilsen (Topsport Vlaanderen-Baloise) won the first race of the French season in Marseillaise, he outsprinted countryman Baptiste Planckaert (Roubaix-Lille Métrople) and Samuel Dumoulin (Ag2r-La Mondiale). Earlier in the race; four riders built up a lead of 6 minutes, but IAM Cycling and Europcar pulled them back for Mikaël Chérel (Ag2r-La Mondiale) to go for a solo attempt. Giant-Shimano took control of the chase and the race came down to the last kilometre where Chérel was swept up and the sprint was set for Vanbilsen to take the victory.

The opening race of the Italian season was won by Simone Ponzi solo with his Neri Sottoli-Yellow Fluo team mate; Mauro Finetto bringing in the bunch 8 seconds later. Andrea Pasqualon came in close behind the strong Neri Sottoli Yellow fluo duo to make it to the podium in third place that had all the flavour of a victory. There couldn’t have been a better beginning for Area Zero D’Amico, the all-Italian continental formation led by Andrea Tonti and Ivan De Paolis, which made their official debut on the Tuscan roads of the GP Costa Etruschi.
“I’m absolutely thrilled for this podium, which came right at the first race; it’s a great result for me but especially for our team, who were making our debut here” says Andrea Pasqualon. “For everyone except me and Ciavatta, this was their first experience among the pros, but regardless of our young age average we all proved to have what it takes. We did a good job getting two men, Chinello and Tecchio, into the initial breakaway. This allowed us to stay covered in the pack. I had imagined that then the race would heat up in the final, with the double pass on the Segalari climb of about 3km with 9km to go to the finish line. Thanks to the help of my team mates I managed to get out in front for the climb that was the essential passage; I rode up really strong but in the last 300 metres of the climb Ponzi managed to break out alone with an irresistible progression for everyone. Then in the final sprint I knew that I would have to do it all on my own; I gave it everything I had and in the final metres I managed to get out to the left along the barricades and capture this important placement which for our team today is worth a victory. It’s a result that boosts morale for our entire group. I hope we’ll be hearing a lot more about Area Zero this year.”
“We knew we had worked well during the entire winter but of course, since it was our first race we didn’t know how we would measure up to the other teams” explains Andrea Tonti the sport director in the team car with Massimo Codol. “Our goal was to take what we have done with the guys up to now and put it into practice, and we did it. Chinello and Tecchio were charged with staying vigilant from the initial kilometres and they did so, getting into the initial break that lit up the race for almost 150 km. All our riders did their absolute best in the race, from the youngest to the most experienced, Pasqualon and Ciavatta, who were the focal point. With this podium Pasqualon has demonstrated his worth and shown that he can go far. But overall, today we proved that we are a united and competitive group and for all of us, athletes and staff, this is the most important result.”

The sprint for second:
New Hour Record for Marchand
French 102 year old Hour Record holder (for his age), Robert Marchand, has done it again. On the Velodrome St-Quentin en Yvelines, just outside Paris, he set a new Hour Record of 26.927 kilometres (16.7 miles) His ride on Friday beats his previous record that he set two years ago by 2.5 kilometres. Whether or not Lampre-Merida, Trek or BMC are planning on signing him is unknown at the moment.
BMC Racing Team Signs Samuel Sánchez
Past Olympic road race champion and grand tour podium finisher Samuel Sánchez will immediately join the BMC Racing Team, President/General Manager Jim Ochowicz announced Sunday.
Brings A Wealth Of Experience
The 35-year-old Spaniard won the 2008 Olympic road race champion in Beijing and owns podium finishes at the Vuelta a España (second in 2009) and the Tour de France (third in 2010). At the 2011 Tour de France, he joined overall winner Cadel Evans on the final podium in Paris as champion of the king of the mountains classification. “Sammy will add a high degree of skill and experience to the BMC Racing Team,” Ochowicz said. “He can cover all the bases, but in particular, we look forward to having him support his new teammates in the Ardennes classics and at the grand tours.” Sánchez has competed in 14 grand tours (finishing 11) and owns stage wins at the Tour and the Vuelta. He has a history of success racing in his home country, winning Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco in 2012, GP Miguel Indurain in 2011, Vuelta A Burgos in 2010, and two stages of Volta a Catalunya (2007, 2012).
Thankful For The Opportunity
Since turning professional in 2000, Sánchez had raced with the Euskaltel-Euskadi team, which ceased operations at the end of the 2013 season. “I feel like a rider who has just earned his first contract,” an exuberant Sánchez said. “I want to thank the entire BMC Racing Team, especially Andy Rihs and Jim Ochowicz, for welcoming me into one of the most prominent teams of the WorldTour. It is my hope that I can share my experience with the younger riders on the team. And after riding so many years to beat Cadel Evans, it will be good to help him since he is a rider I know very well.” Sánchez’s performances at the classics include runner-up finishes at Flèche Wallonne (2006) and Il Lombardia (2006, 2009 and 2012). Ochowicz said specific terms of Sánchez’s contract are not being made public.

Chris Horner Happy with New Team
The one year deal between 2013 Vuelta a España winner Chris Horner and the Lampre-Merida team seems to have pleased the American as he expressed his joy on Twitter: “Excited to announce that I’ll be racing for @lampre_merida! Thanks to Lampre, Merida, @Champion_System, and all of the team sponsors!” He also wrote to his personal supporters “And thanks again to all of the sponsors who took care of me between teams, and fan support along the way. Appreciate the love!” His respond to the Vuelta a España, who also congratulated him, with “Thanks! Can’t wait to get back!” If all the technical details and red tape can be fixed in time, he will debut at the Mallorca Challenge (9th to 12th of February).
Professional since 1995, Horner had his biggest win, a victory that curiously did not open doors and will be the first American rider in the Italian team. His previous teams were: La Francaise des Jeux (1998-1999), Mercury (2000-2001), Prime Alliance (2001-2002), Saturn (2003), Webcor (2004), Saunier Duval (2004-2005), Davitamon -Lotto (2006), Predictor Lotto (2007), Astana (2008-2009) y RadioShack (2010-2013).
With Horner, Lampre-Merida completed its roster for 2014 with new signings: World champion Rui Costa (Movistar), Sacha Modolo (Bardiani), Nelson Oliveira (RadioShack), Rafa Valls (Vacansoleil), Xu Gang (Champions System) and stagaires Bonifazio Niccolo and Valerio Conti.
Team Manager Brent Copeland spoke about the new signing: “We are really pleased to announce the news of Chris joining our team, Chris will be the first American rider to ride for this historical team of more than 20 years in sponsorship.

Movistar Team launches challenging 2014
Telephone squad starts fourth season in cycling’s top tier with stated goal of claiming overall victory in one of the three Grand Tours
Press Release: The Movistar Team, winners of the 2013 UCI WorldTour, launched their 2014 season on Friday at Telefónica’s headquarters in Madrid. The event was attended by Telefónica CEO César Alierta, Public Issues’ Global Director Carlos López Blanco and the squad’s General Manager Eusebio Unzué. The 27 riders wore the blue and green jersey with which they will cover Movistar’s fourth season in the top division of professional cycling.
Telefónica came back into cycling sponsoring three years ago, in February 2011, boosting a close, interactive sport which reaches thousands of fans. It was a three-year opening term full of success, coming to its top in 2013 with the UCI’s recognition as best team in the world, by virtue of the UCI WorldTour ranking including the best races in the sport.
Signings for 2014 are brothers Ion and Gorka Izagirre; climber Igor Antón; sprinter Juanjo Lobato; Adriano Malori, from Italy; Jasha Sütterlin, from Germany; John Gadret, from France; and Colombian Dayer Quintana, the younger brother of Nairo. Eight new faces for a season where the Movistar Team will pursue new challenges in its long, successful career.
Ten months are ahead for the Movistar Team, competing across 14 countries in four different continents where the squad directed by Eusebio Unzué will try to repeat, if not to improve, their victory tally of the last three years, with 21, 29 and 32 wins, respectively, including eight stages in the Giro d’Italia, five in the Tour de France and four in the Vuelta a España. “After such great success, it’s obvious that our goal must be trying to win one of the three Grand Tours,” explained Unzué.
”Last year we already got to the final podium of both the Tour, with Quintana, and the Vuelta, where Valverde has finished 2nd and 3rd in the last two editions. With those antecedents in mind, we’re the first ones to exige bigger results from ourselves, taking that leap which is the hardest for any team, only achieved by one at a time. As well Nairo as Alejandro are physically and mentally ready for such goals, and they will have a strong team at their sides which they trust 100%.” The Movistar Team’s general manager underlined the global quality of his riders: “Our strength was always the unity of our block, and it will remain so. We have riders who can excel in all terrains, and the new signings will make us improve even more. I think it’s quite a balanced block.”
In turn, Carlos López Blanco, Telefónica’s Public Issues’ Global Director, congratulated the squad for their results and remarked during the 2014 Movistar Team launch the positive overview of a three-year lapse full of hard work that has helped to promote the brand and dignity and honour the sport. López Blanco reminded that the corporation took the decision of supporting one of the best teams in the world by its results, tradition and ranking in a difficult moment, so the Movistar Team could still undoubtedly be today a leading factor in international cycling.
A team even more digital and close to the fans
During the presentation, it was underlined how cycling acts as a nexus between Movistar and its fans and customers. In that sense, it was announced that Movistar will be sharing with them unique experiences during Grand Tours or the cycling rides proposed by the brand, with more than 5,000 people taking part in 2013 in events where they got to ride alongside some of the team’s members.
Besides, Telefónica looks for the Movistar Team to be a space for innovation in the digital world – that’s why the network will be boosted during the season as a promotion factor for the sport and the team’s activities. One of the biggest challenges will be getting more visibility for the team in all Europe, Latin America and Asia.
Telefónica announced it is working on a project to develop virtual cycling rides, as well as high-quality content through a Premium YouTube channel, with training videos, pieces on the riders’ everyday life, tips and tricks for amateur cyclists of specific content around the Movistar Team in the biggest cycling events.
During this season, Movistar will be boosting its Bike&Go cycling app to make it differential amongst the ones in its same category. To do so, it will be including gamification initiatives to allow competition between its users, as well as augmented reality for a more interactive user experience.
Lastly, Telefónica announced it has launched the Talentum Startups “Bike Lab”, a program for university students willing to work on technological projects about cycling, coached by members of the Movistar Team and innovation specialists.

Bennati Stays with Tinkoff-Saxo
Italian sprinter Daniele Bennati has renewed his contract with the Tinkoff-Saxo team until 2016. He turned Pro in 2001 and has been with Bjarne Riis since 2013 and has won stages in all the Grand Tours; 2 in the Tour de France, 3 in the Giro d’Italia and 6 stages in the Vuelta a España. “I want to win. I am feeling good, Alberto can count on me,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

The British based women’s professional team has not made many changes from last year’s line-up for 2013. One rider has left, Lauren Kitchen and three have joined; Australian Peta Mullens, Swedish champion Emilia Fahlin and Spanish time trial champion Anna Sanchis.

ASO the Tour de France organisers have announced a woman’s race on the last day of the Tour de France on the Champs Élysées circuit that the men will use to finish the French Grand Tour in Paris on the 27th of July. More details of the event are to be released in a few months.
Sky Announce Races for February
Team Sky has revealed their line-up for the races held in the month of February. Chris Froome debut, like last year, in the Tour of Oman, while Bradley Wiggins will kick off in Mallorca and Andalucia.
Wiggins will lead the British team in the Challenge de Mallorca, accompanied by Sergio Henao, Edvald Boasson Hagen, Peter Kennaugh and David Lopez, among others. Then he will contest the Vuelta a Andalucía with Richie Porte, in the first race after the Australian Tour Down Under in which he won a stage and finished fourth. Boasson Hagen, Peter Kennaugh, Geraint Thomas and Vasil Kiryienka complete the team in the Ruta del Sol
In Oman, Froome has a great team around him with Dario Cataldo, Henao, David López and Mikel Nieve on his debut for Sky, or possibly Kanstantsin Siutsou.

Strade Bianche Invites
Eighteen teams will line-up to ride the dirt roads of the Chianti hills of Tuscany on Saturday the 8th of March. The teams are: Astana, BMC, Cannondale, Lampre-Merida, Movistar, Omega Pharma – Quick-Step, Giant-Shimano, Katusha, Sky, Tinkoff-Saxo, Trek Factory Racing, Androni Giocattoli, Bardiani-CSF, Colombia, IAM Cycling, MTN-Qhubeka, Unitedhealthare and Yellow Fluo.
The next day is the Roma Maxima, Omega Pharma – Quick-Step and Tinkoff-Saxo are not riding, but Ag2r-La Mondiale are. The 17 teams are: Astana, Ag2r-La Mondiale, BMC, Cannondale, Lampre-Merida, Movistar, Giant-Shimano, Katusha, Sky, Trek Factory Racing, Androni Giocattoli, Bardiani-CSF, Colombia, IAM Cycling, MTN-Qhubeka, Unitedhealthare and Yellow Fluo.

Europcar Riders for the Etoile de Besseges
The 44th edition of the UCI 2.1 French stage race runs from the 5th to the 9th of February with four stages of around 150 kilometres and a final individual time trial of 10.7 kilometres.
