After the climbing festival that was the Giro, many of you may be considering your own epic climbing ride this season or next. After covering some training ideas last week, what are nutrition and equipment considerations that might be important in making it a fun rather than a survival ride?
Congratulations to Bill Buckner of Elgin Lake ON - winner of the one week cycling holiday for two with Bici Amore Mio at Italy's best bike hotels. As a loyal PEZ-Fan, Bill is duly excited to start planning one of the best riding weeks of his life.
The curtain has closed on the 2016 Giro d'Italia with an ‘unbelievable’ performance in the last stages by Vincenzo Nibali. They way the Italian champion went from sick to champion was 'incredible' and yes I think you know where Lee will be heading in this Final Giro Lowdown. But, are we wrong to question every performance?
May 30, 2016 - Vincenzo Nibali has won his second Giro, but either in a very cleaver or stealthy manner. We have a catch-up of the final stages, plus results and video from the Belgium Tour. In other cycling news we have the US champs, Critérium du Dauphiné, Paris-Tours, Battaglin re-signs and vido of Nibali with the Chaves family. A full EuroTrash Monday.
Giro'16 Final Stage Roadside: The last stage of a Grand Tour can be a tad 'flat' - not this one; huge crowds, the stage winner disqualified and two of the top ten on the deck, including Esteban Chaves - right at PEZ's feet.
Race Report: It was a damp start to the final stage of the 99th Giro but, despite several crashes, it was a red-hot sprint that saw the man already in Red finally get the win to go with the jersey - Nizzolo. And then, after the celebrations it was announced that he’d been disqualified!
GIRO'16 Roadside St.20: PEZ was on the roads over the Col de la Bonette and the colle dell'Lomarda as Vincenzo Nibali turned this Giro around on the storming final day in the Alps. It's time to go roadside at the Giro!
Giro'16 ROADSIDE: We'd gambled on a big attack by Chaves at high altitude, today. It didn't come and yet again, Kruijswijk looked strong as a beast within 1500 metres of the Giro's highest point - the 2744 metre Colle Dell'Agnello. Little did we know that minutes after the maglia rosa passed us he'd crash on the descent and the race would be turned on its head.
Race Report: Stage 19 was a day of high mountains and high drama as the race passed over the Cima Coppi. Unable to lose Kruijswijk on the climb, it was an unfortunate crash on the descent that saw the Dutchman chasing and losing time all the way into France. Nibali could smell victory for both the stage and the overall and set about re-establishing his enviable reputation as a Grand Tour winner!
The 2016 Giro d'Italia comes to its grand finalé in the northern City of Turin on Sunday, but there is much more to the Piedmont region than big mountain climbs. Peter Easton of VeloClassic Tours takes us on a culinary and cultural journey through Torino as the peloton readies its self for the last battles.
PEZ Roadside: After pizza, grappa and good night sleep, Ed Hood has moved a stage closer to the final of the Giro d'Italia in Turin. Today he takes in the sights at the start and on the those crazy cobbles of Pinerolo all surrounded by those 'Tifosi'.
May 26, 2016 - The Giro d'Italia is on the cusp of the most important stages as the final days hit the highest climbs. We look at the possible winner - Steven Kruijswijk. Results, report, quotes and video from the recent Giro stages and the prologue of the Belgium Tour. Cycling news from Philadelphia, Giant-Alpecin and Lotto Soudal. We finish with video of angry pros.
Stage Preview: Stage 18 from Muggio to Pinerolo features two very tough little climbs right at the end - the Par'Martino, and the San Maurizio. I rode these when the Giro finished here in 2009. The difference this time is they're being taken in reverse, turning what was a tough climb followed a very dangerous descent into an even tougher climb with a still challenging drop through narrow, twisty wooded roads, and a 20% kicker to finish it off.
PEZ Roadside: Stage 17 and Ed Hood moves on from one set of mountains to bit of flat-land before the next section of climbing cruelty... for the riders. On a transition stage like this you need to take in as much as you can and Ed doesn't disappoint; bikes, busses and team bosses... and a bit of racing. It's all roadside.
We review the Lazer Z1 +LifeBEAM helmet, a cooperative effort from Lazer and LifeBEAM, two companies that make things for people that go much-much faster than a bicycle… Lazer are at home at 200+ MPH on moto helmets and LifeBEAM’s head gear additions travel around at speeds that start with the word “Mach”, which is fairly quick…
PEZ Roadside: The final week of the Giro d'Italia is here and Ed Hood hit the ground running on his first day on the road Giro chasing. Stage 16 may have been short, but it wasn't short on excitement as the GC men turned the screw for a wild-fire of action. Take it away Ed:
The Taiwan KOM Challenge offers up 11,000 feet of elevation gain in a 62 mile jaunt up the increasingly legendary Wuling Climb. Our Matt McNamara conquered it last October, and Toolbox Editor Dr. Stephen Cheung is tackling it this July. Let’s look at preparing for this or any other mega-climbing festival.
PEZ Roadside: Everyone knows that the real Giro doesn't start until Ed Hood lands on Italian soil - and business item #1 was join team Orica-Greenedge on their final rest day.
Ahead of the final hard week of the Giro d'Italia the peloton take their third rest day in north Italy and Lee Rodgers gives us his thoughts on the acton so far. Who's hot and who's not: Steven Kruijswijk looks like a Grand Tour champion, has Vincenzo Nibali lost all chance and is the battle over for Alejandro Valverde? All this and more in Lee's Giro Lowdown.
May 23, 2016 - Giro d'Italia rest day number three and we catch up with all the weekend's action from Italy and ask the questions that are on everyone's minds. The Amgen Tour of California finished on Sunday and we have all the results, race reports, quotes and video from the US as well as the Giro. Plus Thomas contract, IAM Cycling stop and Giro video by Orica. EuroTrash Monday coffee time.
