Let’s say you run a nice little bike race in that draws world champions and millions of fans. Conventional wisdom says, “don’t change a thing.” But Andrew Messick, president of AEG Sports, doesn’t approach the Amgen Tour of California from a conventional point of view – and that’s worked just fine so far.

Thursday, October 29, 2009  11:37:27 AM PT
While the Tour is so much about the racing, the Giro offers bike fans three weeks of racing, but also so much more. Sure, the first two weeks of the 2010 Giro d’Italia may seem uneventful on paper, designed to funnel a bunch of GC hopefuls into the final week all within shouting distance of the Maglia Rosa, but there’s always lots to look forward to come May.

Tuesday, October 27, 2009  11:50:13 AM PT
After two weeks of bike racing in France next July, the GC should still be up in the air, but a little trip to the Pyrenees should settle any and all GC issues. Ask any experienced Grand Tour rider and they’ll tell you that the race is won in the last week – and the closing week of the 2010 Tour is not for the faint hearted!

This will be a three-part series with one week going to each of the next three days. We'll get it started with the traditionally wild and crazy Week 1.

Mr. Hood's Musings: Looking Back At Lombardia
Sunday, October 18, 2009  11:36:14 PM PT
It all happens so fast, on the day; autostrada, sign-on, satnavs, pictures, maps, notes, ferries, more pictures, TV, BlackBerry, wi-fi, editing, captioning, SEND - when did we last eat? But the morning after, there's time to reflect, think about the fact that you were part of history for the day.

Friday, October 16, 2009  12:29:13 AM PT
Now that we've got all the pesky background information taken care of, we can get straight to the meat: predictions. There's nothing more fun ahead of a bike race than putting your weatherman hat on and seeing what you come up with when it's all over. We have a pedigreed favorite on top, but a veritable army looking to usurp the King of Lombardia.

Paris-Tours'09: Gilbert Does It Again!
Sunday, October 11, 2009  10:37:51 AM PT
Philippe Gilbert (Lotto) took his second consecutive Paris-Tours victory on Sunday afternoon with a superbly executed sprint victory over Tom Boonen (QuickStep) and Borut Bozic (Vacansoleil). The result may indicate a blanket finish, but in fact the three fast men had slipped the peloton in the closing ten kilometres over the undulations that punctuate the race’s finale.

Paris-Tours'09: The Eternal Question Begs Asking
Friday, October 09, 2009  10:09:53 AM PT
A sprint or a break? A break or a sprint? Every year, we ask the same question, and every year we're left scratching our heads. A race like Paris-Tours looks oh so simple for the sprinters, yet, as has been proven countless times, it absolutely isn't. As the 2009 season winds down, we get one last time to see the fast men do battle with the aggressors on one of the sport's legendary finishes: the Avenue de Grammont.

Wrapping Up Worlds With Rubens Bertogliati
Tuesday, September 29, 2009  8:05:09 AM PT
It’s all very well sitting on the sofa watching the Worlds, speaking words of wisdom in between mouthfuls of beer and handfuls of pretzels; but to get the real story, you need to speak to a man who pedaled those hard roads of Mendrisio. We gave Fabian’s loyal lieutenant, Rubens Bertogliati, Monday to recover; then hit the Diquigiovanni man with the questions on Tuesday morning.

Friday, September 25, 2009  1:37:41 PM PT
With the time trial champions crowned, the focus at the world championships has now shifted to the three road races, to be contested this weekend. The Friday of the championship week is officially designated a “rest day”, we decided it would be a good idea to pull on the Capo Custom kit and do a lap or two to see what the course had in-store for the riders and if the roads around Mendrisio really were as tough as everyone had been saying.
