Pez climbs the Carpegna climb - Marco Pantani's favorite training climb - with the bike Hotel Lungomare in Cesenatico Italy.
I'm looking ahead to my big rides for 2017, and there's no better place to aim for than Italy. I've always loved the Ligurian Coast, and its mix of hills flats, sea-salt air and palm trees, and have logged many a top ride here - including this hilly jaunt over the Passo del Termine from Levanto.
Best of 2016: Inside the last 3km to the summit of the 21.5km Col du Glandon, the air gets thin as we approach 1924m elevation, the road tilts to 11% grades, and each meter seems longer than the last one. There's a reason they call this one 'Hors Category'.
The Alpha jacket is Castelli's smart take on an old problem - cold weather protection for cycling. It's design combines a wind & water repellent outer layer with a breathable vest-like inner layer that could very well be the way to the future - here's the PEZ review.
The email from PEZ-Fan Mike C. was a good reminder as he asked when this year's Negroni Report was coming. So may I present three different negroni experiences in three different places - Milan, the French hamlet of Saint-Pierre-d'Albigny, and Geneva, that mark some standout moments of imbibing.
The best gifts are often great books, and with over 50 cycling books reviewed in the PEZ archives, it's a small step to humbly suggest some of my personal favorites. Here's 10 of the best cycling books to make your holiday reading and shopping a little easier.
The Peter Sagan VIP Charity ride raised over $54,000, took in some great riding around Malibu CA, and gave us a chance to get to know a bit more about the World Champ and most popular ride in the pro peloton.
Wild Rock Travel has been hosting and guiding cycling trips around Europe's best roads for almost 25 years, and while other tour operators have grown their businesses based on a global reach of clients, Wild Rock's focus on Canadian customers offers lower priced trips often overlooked by higher priced competitors. But with their trips all priced in Canadian bucks, they makes sense for anyone who loves riding, eating and drinking in Europe - no matter what country you're from.
Long time PEZ-fans know how we feel about riding in Italy - and why over the years we've logged enough of our own travel miles around the Italian boot to open our own travel agency. We've stayed a a lot of hotels there and can tell you with complete confidence that the Garda Bike Hotel is one of the best.
Castelli's Tempesta line promises 100% waterproof protection with lightweight, extreme weather gear made from new fabrics from eVent & OutDry - here's a closer look. Save time. Ride more. The Velofix slogan says it all, and they delivered when I booked them for a visit to PEZ HQ to tune-up one of my favorite bikes just in time for winter riding season. Fast, convenient, and good quality work made a solid first impression.
Three of the coolest items I saw at Interbike 2016 were the OTTOLock cinch lock, KOO Open eye glasses, and KASK Protone helmet - all shared smart design features that warranted this closer look.
Lombardia Ride: Sometimes you gotta point the car at the cliff and give ‘er some stick. Okay, maybe heading out for an awesome solo ride may not be quite the same... but sometimes heading into the unknown is best approached with a ‘give ‘er’ attitude, and as I once again learned on this awesome ride around Lago di Como, the rewards can be worthy of a lifetime.
Lombardia Retro: Utter confusion was the look on my face when Alessandro handed me the old newspaper and said it was a gift. Upon closer inspection, I realized I was holding the official program of the 1952 Giro di Lombardia – in mint condition! Once I got over the shock that such a treasure still existed – I couldn’t wait to share it with PEZ-Fans…
The Giro di Lombardia was born in 1905, and Giovanni Gerbi – called the red devil – was the first winner. The story of his break – planned in a devilish way, and realized with so much strength – has become a well known legend, which has the taste of a fable both ingenious and malicious.
TOP RIDE: I'm still basking in the afterglow of the 2016 RBC Gran Fondo Whistler - a big goal accomplished in better form than I'd expected. And after weeks of prep, and all the logistics of coordinating the family for the weekend, and over 5 hours on my bike, it all went by a little too fast.
The R-EV1 jersey and bibshorts are the newest addition to Alé Bikewear's fast growing line of top quality cycling kit for the road. It's priced at the mid-range, but delivers to a higher level on design, fit and construction - here's a closer look.
