Vuelta’09 St.21: Greipel’s Day, Valverde’s Vuelta!
Sunday, September 20, 2009  10:58:34 AM PT
Race report: Alejandro Valverde stayed upright to seal his Vuelta victory – the first Grand Tour win of his career. On such a short stage, there was very little that could have happened to alter the overall outcome. I guess that might just happen in a courtroom somewhere down the line.

Vuelta’09 St.20: Millar Puts Them To The Sword!
Saturday, September 19, 2009  10:56:52 AM PT
Race Report: Today David Millar won his 5th stage in all his Vuelta’s, he was given one of the swords that Toledo is famous for along with the large bottle of Cava. But the day has to go to Alejandro Valverde who consolidated his overall victory. Loser of the day was Basso who lost his podium place.

Vuelta'09 St.19: Cobo Provides For Fuji
Friday, September 18, 2009  10:44:11 AM PT
Race Report: This was to be the last chance for anyone with a hope of moving up the GC with several rated climbs on the stage. To make matters more interesting, torrential rain and heavy fog dressed this stage up to be truly epic. The Fuji-Servetto team made good by getting Juan Jose Cobo off the front in the closing kilometers to take a fine win, but there were some serious fireworks going off on the hills. Read on!

Inside La Vuelta With Stage Winner Ryder Hesjedal
Friday, September 18, 2009  8:25:21 AM PT
I was just thinking; ‘I’ll need to SMS Ryder and tell him that our interview is up on the site,’ when I received an SMS myself, from Dave; ‘Hesjedal and Garcia are up the road,’ wow! I thought to myself. Then another; ‘your man has won!’

Vuelta’09 St.18: Irish Eyes Are Smiling!
Thursday, September 17, 2009  11:38:50 AM PT
Race report: For a young guy who’s been knocking on the door for a couple of years now, today’s breakaway was the golden opportunity he’d been waiting for. The day when the planets align, things go the way you hope they will, and nobody else does anything unexpected!

Vuelta'09 St.17: Roux's Last Ditch Heroics
Wednesday, September 16, 2009  10:43:48 AM PT
Race Report: Anthony Roux singlehandedly saved me from drooling from boredom today with a late race move that had even the most sedate of us out of our seats, cheering him on to victory over the mad dash sprint coming up from behind. It was a wonderful victory for the 22-year-old Frenchman. Read on!

Vuelta'09 St.16: Greipel's Green Justice
Tuesday, September 15, 2009  11:23:37 AM PT
Race Report: A second relatively flat day was on course for the Vuelta, and with a crucial Time Trial and Madrid not far ahead, today was ripe for a breakaway. A lone soul trekked most of the day out front, but Andre Greipel snatched victory in the eventual scrum to the line.

Vuelta’09 St.15: Boom Bags Córdoba!
Monday, September 14, 2009  11:02:36 AM PT
Race Report: Today had an interesting course, but the peloton were not interested and let a group of 13 riders gain over 20 minutes. On the last climb of the day, Lars Boom of Rabobank launched a strong attack from the lead group and time trialled the last 20 kilometres to victory in Córdoba.

Vuelta’09 St.14: A Right Royal Victory Romp!
Sunday, September 13, 2009  12:01:44 PM PT
Now might just about be the time to sidle down to your local back-alley bookie, give a shifty, sideways look and slip inside to stick your Euros, Dollars, or preferred local currency on a rather regal little Italian for the World title win at the end of the month.

Vuelta’09 St.13: Mountain Man Moncoutie!
Saturday, September 12, 2009  10:44:02 AM PT
Race Report: David Moncoutie took every mountain top today and a wonderful stage win on the highest point of this Vuelta a España. Behind; Mosquera showed he must be one of the best super-climbers in the peloton by dropping the favourites; Valverde, Gesink and Basso. Bad luck for Evans and bad news for Sanchez and Danielson, they all lost time today.

Vuelta De Pez ’09: Bad Roads, Great Racing!
Wednesday, September 09, 2009  4:21:26 PM PT
Roadside St. 11: Another day in Murcia and I’m not sure if my cars suspension will take much more of the bad roads in this province! More narrow, twisting roads, but the weather was nice and I saw all our old friends from previous days and made a couple of new ones.

Vuelta'09 St.11: Farrar Takes His First
Wednesday, September 09, 2009  10:42:53 AM PT
Race Report: Tyler Farrar has been knocking on the door of a Grand Tour stage victory all season, and finally, in his third Grand Tour of the year - he got it. In a painfully long sprint, Farrar managed to hold on to take the top spot over Philippe Gilbert.

Vuelta De Pez ’09: Bike Racing, Food, And Girls!
Tuesday, September 08, 2009  5:59:12 PM PT
Roadside Pez: Alejandro Valverde is in the Gold jersey, and he is on home soil: Murcia. He held onto his leader’s jersey and had his kids on the podium with him, what could be better? Not much I guess, although I did have a few problems with the fine Murcianos. Let the story unfold!

Vuelta'09 St.10: Gerrans Wins One In All Three
Tuesday, September 08, 2009  10:54:34 AM PT
Race Report: Another hot and dry day here at the Vuelta, where a 171km jaunt from Alicante to Alejandro Valverde’s hometown of Murcia awaited the peloton. A huge group of 19 escaped, and from that bunch, Simon Gerrans beat 3 other survivors at the end to take a fine win! Read on!

Vuelta De Pez ’09: Food, Fans, And Mountains!
Tuesday, September 08, 2009  9:23:24 AM PT
Roadside Pez: After yesterday's stage with all those people, I was hoping for a quieter day at the office, which is my car and it’s filling up with so much rubbish I’ll soon be able to use a shovel to clean the interior! As always on a race, the best laid plans go awry, and today was no different, but it was all the usual fun in the end.

Vuelta'09 St.9: All Hail The Underdog
Monday, September 07, 2009  12:03:58 PM PT
Race Report: Glory for underdogs Xacobeo Galicia as Gustavo Cesar Veloso won into Xorret de Cati from a race long break, with a smile a mile wide on his face; but the scariest ever face from Lotto’s Cadel Evans as he blamed Robert Gesink (Rabobank) for baulking him as the ‘heads’ sprinted for the third place bonus on this stage 9 of the 2009 Vuelta – the vital seconds won by a nitrous oxide boosted Alejandro Valverde (Caisse) and duly cladding him in gold.

Vuelta De Pez ’09: Mountains Of Fans!
Sunday, September 06, 2009  5:27:28 PM PT
Roadside Pez: I don’t think I have ever seen so many people in one place in my life! The last 10 kilometres of stage 8’s summit finish on the top of the Aitana was like a football crowd, except they were cooking their food, playing music, dancing, and generally enjoying themselves at over 1,000 metres altitude. Spain knows how to FIESTA!

Vuelta'09 St.8: The Kid Is Back
Sunday, September 06, 2009  12:54:32 PM PT
Race Report: The first day in the mountains was all we hoped for and more. The early break nearly pulled off the coup and made it to the line. If only it wasn't for a resurgent former Giro winner and umpteen victor at the Giro di Lombardia: Damiano Cunego. Cunego seems to have found his best at an ideal time: a strong Vuelta first, then it's on to Worlds and back to Como.

Vuelta De Pez ’09: The Rain In Spain, Etc…
Saturday, September 05, 2009  4:31:27 PM PT
Roadside Pez: Rain! Yes, yesterday we had unbelievably hot weather, and today the temperature dropped and the rain came down, but this was not going to dampen my enjoyment driving round the Valencia Formula 1 Street circuit...and watching a bike race of course!

Inside La Vuelta With Fredrik Kessiakoff
Saturday, September 05, 2009  4:10:04 PM PT
‘Velo 2009,’ the annual professional cycling bible, makes no mention of Fredrik Kessiakoff (Sweden). That’s because in 2008 he was in the world of fat tyres, grip shifts, flat bars and suspension – a mountain biker, albeit, one of the best in the world. 2009 has seen him establish himself firmly on the road scene – we caught up with the Fuji-Servetto man after the baking heat of stage 6 in Xativa as he races his second Grand Tour of the year.

Vuelta'09 St.7: Really, Nobody Does It Better
Saturday, September 05, 2009  11:22:01 AM PT
Race Report: I've said it before, and I'll say it again: nobody does it better than Fabian Cancellara on a time trial bike. It's just a fact folks. Fabu proved it for the umpteenth time today in a rain sodden Valencia. Behind, the GC took its first fledgling steps toward sorting itself out.

Vuelta De Pez ’09: Boom-Boom Boonen-Not!
Friday, September 04, 2009  5:55:38 PM PT
Roadside Pez: Today’s stage Start and finish town of Xativa is known to be the hottest town in the Valencia region. What I mean is: when it's hot everywhere, it's extremely hot in Xativa and today proved it! Very hot conditions, maybe too hot for Mr. Boonen.

Vuelta'09 St.6: Happy Day For Vacansoleil
Friday, September 04, 2009  11:37:25 AM PT
Race Report: It was an incredibly hot day at La Vuelta today, and the soaring temps played host to the warm up hills before the mountains begin in earnest in a few days time. It was just lumpy enough for a break to maybe stick, but with Columbia in gold, they’d be looking to get Greipel in another sprint. The sprint happened, but not how you think. Read on!

Vuelta De Pez ’09: Vino In Vinaros!
Friday, September 04, 2009  9:42:30 AM PT
Roadside Pez: Today I went up to Vinaros for the finish of La Vuelta's Stage 5. I also needed to sort out my creds, get my freebies, generally have a look around at who was on the race this year, and maybe take the occasional photo of a Daily Distraction. As per the norm, these things didn’t pan out just as I planned...and there were two Vino incidents!

Inside La Vuelta With Milram's Martin Velits
Friday, September 04, 2009  8:29:44 AM PT
The Vuelta has come home to Spain; so it’s only logical that Pez should talk to a Slovakian who rides for a German team! Martin Velits is twin brother of former world under 23 road race Champion, Peter – both are milkmen for German dairy team Milram, but will be transferring over to Team Columbia for 2010. We caught up with the 24 year-old from Bratislava after stage 5 from Tarragona to Vinaros.

Vuelta’09 St.5: New Country, New Leader
Thursday, September 03, 2009  11:22:36 AM PT
Race report: Aaah, temperatures in the high 30s Celsius, sun-scorched landscapes, olive trees in the distance, dry roads, cloudless skies. This must be Belgium …. nope, wait. It’s Spain!! The Vuelta is back home and normal climactic conditions prevail.

Vuelta'09 St.4: Greipel Takes It Amid Chaos
Tuesday, September 01, 2009  10:53:27 AM PT
Race Report: Wet, wet, and wet. Did we say wet? Ooh doggie it was a soggy 224km from Venlo in the Netherlands to Liege in Belgium today for the riders, which seemed to be fitting as the course rode some of the roads of the early season one day classics, including the Cauberg - twice. A spectacular crash made a mess of the finish, won again by Columbia-HTC. Read on!

Inside La Vuelta With Silence's Charly Wegelius
Monday, August 31, 2009  1:07:40 PM PT
Day two of the Vuelta - and it wouldn’t be a proper Grand Tour if Pez didn’t have men on the inside; ‘old married man’ and Silence-Lotto main stay Charly Wegelius took time on Sunday evening to give us an insight in to the ‘Tour of Everywhere, except Spain.’

Vuelta'09 St.3: It’s A Surprise Winner...Again!
Monday, August 31, 2009  11:48:16 AM PT
Race report: It had all the makings of a sprinters’ course today, and a frenzied massed dash for the line was precisely what we got. After a long, long breakaway bid failed, we got the fast men together at the finish, and they provided us with another sprint, and another unexpected top three.

Vuelta'09 St.2: Surprise, Surprise! It's ...
Sunday, August 30, 2009  11:28:31 AM PT
Race Report: Well, how often do the battered pro riders who've not quite set the plains and passes of Europe a-flame during the season roll into the Vuelta looking for redemption? Pretty damn near every year, and there's a host of 'em, is the answer. Today was the turn of a guy and a team who needed a big win more than most.

Vuelta'09 St.1: The All Conquering Cancellara!
Saturday, August 29, 2009  12:12:13 PM PT
Race Report: When it comes to time trials Fabian Cancellara is a hard man to beat and today was no different. Tom Boonen put up a great performance for second place, but the Swiss specialist was too good on the damp Assen circuit to take the first Gold Jersey of La Vuelta 2009.

VUELTA '09: A Look At The Route!
Wednesday, August 26, 2009  7:23:54 AM PT
As the Vuelta start nears, we figure it's a good time to head back to wintertime for a gander at PEZ's first impressions of this year's fantastic loop around Spain. As always, Alastair Hamilton is our man in Espana - he headed down to his local bar around Christmastime in 2008 for some cool beverages and the opportunity to watch the Vuelta presentation amongst friends. Why can't we have that opportunity in North America?
