PEZ Talk: Revolution's James Pope
Wednesday, November 11, 2009  8:45:36 PM PT
Amongst all the gloom and doom of sponsors pulling out disenchanted with doping scandals, and races folding, winter track racing does have its successes. One is the 'Revolution' series of indoor winter race programmes at Manchester velodrome in England. Organiser, James Pope took time to talk to Pez about the events, now entering their seventh season.

PEZ Talk: Six Day Up And Comers East And Carroll
Tuesday, November 10, 2009  8:06:40 AM PT
They may sound like a lounge singing duet, but there's no schmaltz to these guy's mission; they're trying to build a career playing to that most demanding of houses - a six day crowd. We caught up with the two 22 year olds - Guy from Indianapolis and Austin from Orange County - a few days into the six days of Grenoble.

PEZ Talk: UK's Newest ProTour Rider, Tom Faiers
Wednesday, November 04, 2009  7:02:56 AM PT
Here at Pez we pride ourselves on being on the case of who's up and coming - but sometimes even Pez misses the boat. The first we heard of Tom Faiers was when he signed recently for Pro Tour team Footon-Servetto; but a quick call to the team's main man - ex-pro Mauro Gianetti, soon had us in communication with the 22 year-old Englishman from Cheltenham, who has the likes of Luis Leon Sanchez and Alejandro Valverde singing his praises.

PEZ-Clusive: His Name Is Clear - Iljo Keisse
Tuesday, November 03, 2009  8:14:57 AM PT
The cheer from the cabin next door to ours - below the Grenoble velodrome - told us that the result Flanders had been holding its breath for, had arrived. The positif in the 2008 Gent Six Day race from Belgium's number one Six Day man, Iljo Keisse, has been dismissed on the grounds of 'insufficient evidence.' "Cathine was not found in the 'B' sample and HCT was there in quantities so small as to have no effect on performance." Pez was granted the first face to face interview with Iljo, after the result was announced.

PEZ Talk: Looking To '10 Worlds With Aldo Ilesic
Saturday, October 31, 2009  12:17:19 PM PT
The Worlds; not the ones that Evans just won, the ones in Evans’ home land, next year – if you want to make your national squad for them, when should you start your build up? The answer is: three weeks ago! Slovenian sprinter and big winner for Team Type 1 in 2009, Aldo ino Ilesic has already heard all about the largely urban, flat course and it’s suitability for his big frame – and big finish.

PEZ Talk: Fleeman Flies To British Hill Climb Win
Sunday, October 25, 2009  6:35:25 PM PT
Cervelo’s Dan Fleeman left it late to take his first win of the year; but it took him just 3 minutes 18 seconds to convert late season road form to victory in the most specialist and punishing of races – the British Hill Climb Championship, on the 1100 metre Pea Royd Lane climb near Sheffield, England on Sunday.

PEZ Talk: Wrapping Up '09 With Timmy Duggan
Saturday, October 24, 2009  9:08:47 AM PT
It has been a few months since last we spoke to Garmin's Timmy Duggan. In the 2008 Tour of Georgia, the young man from Colorado came close to death in a 100 kph pile up; but 2009 has seen him back in the shark pool - at the deep end! We thought Paris - Tours was a good excuse to catch up.

PEZ Talk: Off To The Shack For Daryl Impey
Tuesday, October 13, 2009  11:06:18 AM PT
The last time that PEZ spoke to Daryl Impey was back in early May; he was lying in a hospital bed in South Africa after a horrific crash within sight of the finish of the last stage of the Tour of Turkey – with the yellow jersey on his back! Things have taken a very positive turn of late though. Read on!

PEZ Talk: Mr. Moving Up, Jack Bauer
Friday, October 09, 2009  11:36:04 PM PT
Nine Belgian kermesse wins and Allan Peiper on the case to find him a team; it’s been a good year for New Zealander, Jack Bauer! The last time we spoke to Jack was back in the summer, he had five wins at that stage, but he’s nearly doubled that, now – we thought we’d best have a word before he headed back to the other side of the world for yet another summer of racing.

PEZ Talk: Sky Recruit Steve Cummings
Friday, October 09, 2009  9:26:53 AM PT
Last year he won the Italian semi-classic, the Coppa Bernocchi. In stage races, during 2008 he won a stage and was second on GC in the Giro della Provincia Di Reggio Calabria and finished in the same position on GC in the Tours of Britain and Denmark. It looked as if 2009 would be the year when Britain’s Steve Cummings stepped up to the very highest levels of the sport; but it wasn’t – why?

PEZ Talks With Irish Strongman David McCann
Wednesday, October 07, 2009  9:09:19 AM PT
There were some great rides in the World Elite time trial championships; the trouble was that Fabian’s towering performance over shadowed everything. Take the man in 11th spot - Dave McCann of Ireland, no sponsor, no state of the art bike but a solid performance that saw him in the ‘hot seat’ area for a large part of that sunny afternoon in Mendrisio.

Catching Up With A Missile: Ivan Dominguez
Friday, October 02, 2009  9:42:21 AM PT
Chou Chou, Du Du, Ja Ja – I hate those French riders' nicknames! But there’s one nickname that I do like; “The Cuban Missile” – that’s more like it! His real name is pretty cool too; ‘Ivan Dominguez.’ We caught up with 33-year-old with the big finish towards the end of the Tour of Utah; but all that Vuelta and Worlds stuff means that we didn’t run this piece as quickly as we usually might. But with new boss, Michael Ball announcing a new range of Rock Racing bikes, equipment and race food, our timing isn’t bad!

PEZ Talk: Airbrusher To The Stars Stefano Barzaghi

PEZ Talk: To The ProTour For Adam Blythe
Thursday, October 01, 2009  9:00:15 AM PT
It was five or six years ago, a big meeting at the Meadowbank Velodrome in Edinburgh; it was in the days when the Cycling Weekly magazine acknowledged the existence of Scottish racing and yours truly was their man on the patch. There was a 14 year-old competing; not just in the juvenile events, he was winning races against experienced senior riders. I remember thinking; ‘that one will be finished by the time he’s a second year junior, or he’s going all the way!’

PEZ Talks With The Resurgent Jamie Burrow
Wednesday, September 30, 2009  9:07:45 AM PT
It’s ten years since Englishman Jamie Burrow was rated number one under 23 in the world; he signed with US Postal, but his pro career didn’t go the way he wanted and he spent seven frustrating years, ‘on the brink of something.’ But the 32 year-old is back, right at the top of a different aspect of the sport – Fondos. His win this year in this year’s Maratona delle Dolomiti was big news in Italia.

PEZ Musings: What the Fondo?
Tuesday, September 29, 2009  11:19:26 PM PT
So what is a Fondo and what the heck is so Gran about it? American cycling culture has a reputation for lagging behind European cycling culture in every way: the style, the history, the races, the fans, the media coverage. However, America is catching up. Quickly. Between the dominance of American riders in races like the Tour de France and the creation of the Tour of California (a major event on the international racing calendar) the gap is slowly coming together.

Today was the day that the prognostication had to stop; it was time for the rubber to do the talking on the tar, over three laps and 49.8 kilometres of Swiss countryside. We didn’t manage a chat with Fabian, but team mate Rubens Bertogliati was happy to tell us about this wonderful day’s racing.

PEZ Chats With Tom Zirbel Before His Huge Ride
Thursday, September 24, 2009  10:30:05 AM PT
This morning, I had the unique opportunity to do a quick email interview with Tom Zirbel, just hours before he set out on his incredible 4th place ride. After Cancellara's astonishingly dominant performance, Tom was surely the story of the day. In one of those rare moments, we can look back at his pre-race words and smile. Read on.

Moving Toward Worlds With Rubens Bertogliati
Monday, September 21, 2009  9:06:31 AM PT
The ink is barely dry on the Vuelta finishing sheets and we’re talking “the Worlds” – why? Because it’s our job, sir! Our man at Mendrisio for the ‘cronometro’ and ‘corsa in linea’ will be pro of ten years, former Tour de France yellow jersey holder and reigning Swiss elite time trial champion, Rubens Bertogliati (Diquigiovanni). We thought we’d catch up with Rubens before the Worlds, just to set the scene.
