If no one answers the phone at your local bike shop this week, it’s because everyone’s in Vegas at our annual week-long slobber-fest of what’s newest and coolest in bikes. The floor doors don’t open till Wednesday, but here’s a few sneak peeks to wet your whistle…
Along with a brand new logo that looks ahead to a bold future, American Classic introduces their 58mm deep Carbon Clinchers to use every day or as race wheels with an aerodynamic advantage. Bill Shook selected the aluminum bead over an all carbon bead for improved braking, and to protect the tire and avoid flats. Stiff and compliant, they hold high cruising speed with less effort. At 1880 grams for the ste, they’re also offered in upgrade with Ceramic Bearings, Titanium QR’s, Wheel Bags, and a PowerTap.
CycleOps Power’s all new line of Pro Series trainers feature an all new easier to use frame with single side bike attachment that is stiffer and more stable than their current frame. Three new models: the Jet Fluid Pro, SuperMagneto Pro and the world’s first trainer to include PowerTap Technology, the PowerBeam Pro make up the line. CycleOps has also revamped the PowerTap product family to offer 4 wireless models from $900-$2100 with the upper two models featuring an all new 15mm alloy axle and the top SLC+ model featuring ceramic bearings. All PowerTap hubs will feature ANT+Sport compatibility.
The 2009 Ridley Noah has been re-designed from the ground up. Retaining the same ride quality as the 2008 Noah, the frame has been designed to be completely aerodynamic. The new Noah has been tested in the wind tunnel to be the fastest road racing bike in the world.
HED Stinger Flame Rouge wheels get a total rim redesign, are “rather stunning to ride” says the press release. New for ’09, they include ceramic bearings, carbon hubs and a new titanium skewer to decrease weight, bladed 6/4 titanium spokes for wheel strength and stiffness, and weigh in at just 1295 grams (tubulars). Their carbon layup builds in lateral stiffness for sprinting and cornering, but reportedly avoids the leg-sapping and back busting vertical stiffness.
The guys at Capo (formerly Capoforma) take another big step up with the addition of their Potenza line of kit. Continuing along the highroad, Capo’s lines are all made in Italy, and use high-wicking hydrophobic polyesters, flat-lock seams, full length zips, and Capo™ Silicone Gel Grippers on sleeves, legs, and waistbands. The bibs are a 6 panel anatomic with Capo™ D4 Carbon EIT Insert chamois – it’s an elastic one-piece construction with varying thickness, anti-microbial micro-fiber composed of carbon threads and enhanced perennial channel and top for additional comfort and protection. If you haven’t tried Capo yet – you’re missin’ out.
Arundel’s new Mandible Cage uses a weight saving foam core construction and geometrically enhanced arms to keep bottles even more secure. At 28 grams it’s their lightest cage yet, it comes in classic black 3k weave to snaz up any bike, and at $64.95 it’s some bling you can afford.
CamelBak introduces wearable hydration with the RaceBak™, designed for cyclists, endurance athletes and triathletes. It fits under a jersey and has an aerodynamic and stable compartment for a 72 oz reservoir. Both men’s and women’s styles are available in 5 sizes (see chart below). It features their QuickFit™ Chafe-free compression fabric on upper part of jersey to stabilize water and conform to your body for a snug fit; QuickWick™ Lightweight, breathable fabric construction on lower part of jersey to helps wick moisture away from the body for quicker drying; and the HydroPouch™ integrated reservoir compartment.
A sore butt is no laughing matter, so here’s nubütte’s serious butte butter .This high-quality anti-chafing cream is made from natural ingredients like Shea butter, Tea tree oil, Calendula and Witch Hazel (to name a few), and unlike water based chamois creams, it stays put and stays active a lot longer. I had to warm it up in my fingers before it was spreadable, but so far I’m really liking the results…
